Funny Story About (My) Cultural Snobbery

I have lived in the Rosarito area for several years and love the shop Dulceria Ayala which is on the corner and on the same side of the street as Banco Santander.

They have these huge bins of dried fruit, nuts and sweets sitting next to the sidewalk (no sneeze guard!) . Inside the dark unlit shop there is a cornucopia of Mexican party supplies - piƱatas, decorations and much more.

The front counter has a selection of cheeses from local producers (not refrigerated) and some kind of pressed pork head cheese called "chicharron ...(?).

I go there to buy locally produced honey (it's supposed to help prevent allergies).

The honey is packaged in sturdy glass bottles with secure screw-on lids without any labeling.

In my egotistical way, I felt that by patronizing a local business where nothing had a Spanish label over an American produced product made me more authentic.

Ha, ha ,ha. When I got home, I pulled the unlabeled honey jar out of the plastic outside sack and then removed it from the brand new, not reused paper liner which was emblazoned with the lettering "Trader Joe's".

Remember the cute "HSC" labels they put over a pack of mexican Alas cigarettes?
