i'm fishing in spenser gulf south australia
panga/banana boat are a rareity here
thats why i had to research them
it's like a very big lake here
wind blown, short choppy waves with no front on them
the 19' is tackling them good but in saying that i havent been in a 21ft banana boat..so i cant compare
but it rides a lot better than the broad beamed boats i'm use to

would love a nice rolling 6ft swell for a change
cheers jack

in my area of the upper gulf ...snapper, kingfish and mullaway are the larger fish
down south is
Southern Bluefin Tuna, Samson Fish, Yellowtail Kingfish, Snapper, Blue Morwong, Nannygai, Blue Groper, Australian Salmon and King George Whiting and the occasional marlin and a lot of sharks..film crews come from all over the world to film them

promo photo

here is the promo photo of my oz panga
it is a modified v hull
sharp bow, high lift
hull, slightly concave staring at about 1/3 from bow , broadening to the stern to about 2' 6" along 2 runners of the flatish section with a 22 deg deadrise
i find it a very nice hull
and dryer than most boats, that i've been in
19 ' x 5' 6"

Well, isn't this a really funny, small world. Here I am on a Mexican forum reading about a panga in Australia. I just bought a 19 ft Quintrex boat that is built in Australia that I will be using in Mexico. All of the used pangas that I looked at were either overpriced or just plain worn out so I started doing research and the Quintrex won the contest hands down. If she performs half as well in Baja as she did in Florida, I am going to have to start fishing only half as much to keep the fish populations from going down.

alloy Quintrex

yes it is a small world, being a pressed alloy they can get some shape in the hull
yes they are a nice boat and will last many years
it's the opposite here pangas are cheap
alloy are dear

Nice

Thats a nice looking hull. Do you do any spearfishing in australia??? I know you mentioned that there are lots of sharks but are they agressive? Here in baja there used to be a lot of sharks but the shark fisherman have dealt a heavy blow to the population and I rarely see them anymore, especially the big ones. fishin rich

I have looked at a lot of panga style boats in the 19 foot range and most of them would do well with a 75 if you are trying to get good mileage and performance and mainly carry one or two people but if you are going to load it heavier and put in livewell and 3 or so people then you would probably want the 90. We have a boat that is built on the east cape at 23 ft and does very well on 90 hp. Some guys who are used to pushing draggy american made hulls try to up them to 115 or 125 but they just add top end without much change in bottom end performance. A four stroke is a little heavier but the savings in gas more than make up for their tendency to be a little slow out of the hole. I personally would never use a Suzuki, prefer the Honda as far as parts on the inside, and settle for a Yamaha. Kinda depends on how long you want to run the motor.

4ft beam

thanks for that guys
i was guessing 50-60hp for the 4' beamed one, being narrower
going by my 5' 6" beam ub 19' that is powered by a 70hp which is plenty for me
pushes it 25 nts and i only go 15-20
so i will power the 19 x 4' beam boat the same 70hp

the 2nd 19' boat i got with the 4ft beam at waterline
are there going to be much difference in the ride
how do you think it will perform
are there any quirks in the handeling that i should be aware of

being new to panga's..i'm flying blind
thanks
cheers
jack
how much do you pay for a new 75hp 2 stroke

By Jove I think you've got it. I think you are right on with the horsepower thing and it sounds like you don't want to go skimming across the water at 50 anyway. In the US, two strokes (except for the new technology) are almost being given away by the dealers since most do not meet the 2006 emisssion standards and we are seeing the two strokes kinda die out. There are some new technology motors that are supposed to be less polluting but some like the Ficht injection have been plagued with problems since they showed up. In Mexico, the fishermen use 55hp Yamaha enduros and they seem to run forever and they are tiller steering them on the 22 ft pangas.
Handling wise, I think you will love the way the boat handles the water. I don't know about your wave sets, but in Mexico the longer boats, 22 or 23, seem to handle the water in the Sea of Cortez much more effectively. One place that you may find a real performance difference is how you trim the boat out. A panga that is totally out of trim becomes a pounding sensation and slaps the water even on smooth glassy water, but when trimmed properly, they handle as well as any boat I have ever driven.
