Whales still there in April 2019?
Because of school & work schedule, my opportunity to drive from LA to Guerrero Negro to pet some whales is April 19 & 20, 2019. Can anyone
predict as to weather they will still be in the lagoon that late in the season? While I would love to make the trip if they're there, I don't want to
bother driving all the way to GN, if they're not going to be there.
Any guesses?

Whale watching season ends officially on april 15 in Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio.
It ends ´till April 30th in Magdalena Bay and May 30th for Loreto Bay National Park.
To answer your question, yes, a few whales may still be there but nobody can take you out off season.

I had no idea there was a season and that whale-watching was not allowed at other times. Seems obvious now, but it never dawned on me before!

First: Impossible to know exactly how long the gray whales will be around, but in general April is late in the season to see many of them in the
lagoons. Now through mid-March is the busiest time with the best chance to see them- but I've also read that this has been a strange year in several
ways: The whales have been arriving late, not as many calves are in the lagoons (acc. to Shari Bondy), many of the adults look skinny (which may be
why there are fewer calves- less food), and there have been several dead whales in Scammons.
There are always a few carcasses- but this year seems to have more.
Every year is different, and this one has been unusual in several ways.

If you can go down into Baja, there are sure a whole bunch more to see and do than the gray whales! I have been going to Baja since 1965 and I have
still not done the whale thing in the lagoons. So much Baja, so little time!

Nature at its best, IMO.

Elizabeth would like to, as well. Someday, perhaps?
Our vacations are always in the summer to take advantage of warm waters of the Sea of Cortez and the whales won't change their migration to suit our
schedule... LOL!

We've done it on a 3 day weekend that took 4 days 😄 but we are coming from Arizona
