Grey Whale losses high returning from Baja

Sad to see the high casualties of Grey Whales returning north from Baja. The malnutrition losses are the most alarming.

I wonder how the present day population compares with pre-whaling days. I would think that there would be a maximum population that the food resources could support. Could they have rebounded in numbers to that point?

Turns out a whale that died on a Northern California beach was impacted by a ship... and not killed by Climate Change as previously reported.

Scientists don't know why yet:

"But it’s too soon to pinpoint the root causes, or to know whether it’s the beginning of a more permanent trend, said Elliott Hazen, a research ecologist with NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center in Monterey, Calif.

Researchers can’t even tell if it’s a problem of supply or demand.

“Whether it’s not enough prey, too many whales, issues with the habitat — that is what we are currently investigating,” Greenman said.

Adding to the mystery is the fact that other whale species do not seem to be affected, he added."

Well, I guess I can finally get that whale skeleton for my front yard..
Keeping up with the Gomez'z and all:coolup:
Of,course, that takes a while...
Hey, I just thought of a new business...
I'm taking orders...
I can box it up and ship it...
Some assembly required... like Ikea... I'll call it... ready...
Whale-Kea
Anybody know what a good grey whale sheleton is worth on the free market?
Like a billion pesos... is that asking too much?

I saw that one. Wonder if it had a calf with it.
We have had several whales wash up on the central coast. Not this year that I have heard but in the last 5 ish years.
I don't know if they were natural deaths or preyed on or hot a ship. I know one didn't because I went to it and it was in perfect shape.

Reminds me of a joke.

How do you circumcise a whale?

With four skin divers. ;)
