Prodigy

The upload speed on Prodigy has been reduced to 106 and will not carry voip any longer. In the contract and on their website the speed is described as "up to 128," so they are probably not commiting any fraud, but...

You can make a call ip to phone, but when your party answers, they cannot hear you or you are totally broken up and unintelligible.

Telmex/Prodigy hardball.

This is happening in Loreto too.

Everyone is talking about it although I haven't tested it. I use CrystalVoice via my satellite connection and its working fine.

I just now checked on my DSL connection downtown and it is not working at all. Says "no connect" after dialing. guess they're blocking a port.

Maybe they'll be smart enough to come up with a product of their own that can compete.

My Skype attempts from Loreto over Prodigy DSL have failed-the download works, but not the upload.

Fred Metcalf posted this link on the other board:

http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20050303.html

A good explanation of how phone companies in the US have shut down internet phones, and how they can harness the technology for their own profit, at, of course, a higher cost to the user.

Thanks for posting that story

good article and raspberries to my family and friends who told me Mexico was a communist dictatorship for blocking the technology. Looks like it will be happening up there soon too.

Crystal Voice

After my unhappy experience with VoIP on DirecWay, I signed up with Crystal Voice and it works fine, albeit with a significant delay. Since they can make the scheme work even on a dialup connection, it makes you wonder why the others can't. Just for the heck of it, I tried my Crystal Voice on my Laptop when back in the U.S. and the dialup actually had less delay than the DirecWay.
