20,000 expelled or deported from US into city of Tijuana so far this year

TIJUANA, Baja California, Mexico (Border Report) — Officials in Tijuana say so far this year, they have received about 20,000 people who have been
deported or expelled from the United States.
The numbers on average, are a bit lower than the last two years.
“Last year we had 67,000 people, the year before it was the same more or less, we are on course to finish the year with about the same number, maybe
less,” said Alejandro Ruíz Uribe, a delegate with the Mexican Federal Government.
According to Ruíz, most of the deportees are middle-aged men.
“In the entire state of Baja California, we have gotten 22,379 repatriations, it might be less than last year due to the COVID-19 situation,” he
said.
Ruíz pointed to an immigrant shelter built by the Mexican government with room for 3,000 people, it’s operating at about 5-percent capacity.
“Basically they’re all women and children with a few men,” said Ruiz.

This article states that there is nothing new, nothing changed year to year, on a border that sees millions cross annually, between two populous
countries 350 million and 100 million respectively, 20,000 were recently repatriated for illegally crossing, suggesting there is a huge number of
people who cross the border illegally and very few were recently apprehended. Shelters are basically unused, Ruíz pointed to an immigrant shelter
built by the Mexican government with room for 3,000 people, it’s operating at about 5-percent capacity.

I think there is something new.
By most accounts, there are many fewer people crossing into the US, illegally. More walls. Mexico interceding at its southern border. Greater scrutiny
at legal border crossings, due to the CV.
So, if the numbers being deported are about the same, it is possible that undocumented/illegal( whatever the PC term for them is, this year)
deportations involve those "discovered" in the US, who crossed illegally before Trump's border clampdown. There's still plenty of those in the US,
according to most counts.
Why are the shelters at such low capacity in Mexico? Probably because they used to be housing a lot of persons who were waiting for their chance to
cross illegally or were waiting for the chance at asylum applications. Since those options are so remote, they have gone elsewhere.
Who knows where? Anywhere. The shelters probably arent very pleasant.
