For John Harper and any other stream trout fisherman
I've kind of adopted a plan to go after native trout strains, Last summer i got the Utah cutthroat challenge completed, and am well on my way to
achieving the California Heritage Trout challenge and have started on the western states native trout challenge.
I have caught Nelson Trout on San Pedro Martir, but after watching this, I'm thinking this might be another challenge

Have you checked off the Lahontan Cutthroat yet? I used to catch them in the Truckee river and some of the feeder streams when I lived there. That
was in the 70s, so any tips I could have given you about the area are lost to time.
If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!

Gringo, not the lahontan yet. i wasn't willing to go d on a ladder in the middle of the lake. but I now understand there are creeks with them in
it, so thats scheduled for this summer!

Mann Lake in Oregon has Lahontan trout and they're of decent size. All you need is a float tube. Early spring is the best time of year.

You can fish the lake where fish and game breads the cutthroat's off of monitor pass outside or Markleville. It's open for a week or month in the
summer every year, big lunkers..

I'll check out the video, thanks, Carl! Hoping for some rain, vaccinations, and less restrictions on travel so I can check on the population of the
San Rafael.
I've caught Lahontan CT out of McCleod lake above Mammoth. Barbless hooks, catch and release only. Not sure if they are a sustainable population, or
replenished by stocking, but I've had good luck for them several times on PA's. I don't think they qualify for the Heritage challenge, as they are
transplants. They seem to be quite docile when caught, give up real fast for easy C&R.
I've heard the big Lahontan taste bad, after they become meat eaters instead of bug eaters. But, that's just what I heard.
I did have some Sandhill Crane the other day, absolutely delicious, like filet mignon. The Ribeye of the Sky, as they are called. Absolutely
wonderful experience.

A few things to consider if you are considering the Truckee River drainage. So far this year, we are at, or near record low snow pack, so unless the
storms start making it onshore, spring flow levels will be early this year!
Even back in the seventies, the Truckee area was a popular "second home" area because it is great for winter sports, or summer retreats. It is even
more so now, and lot of people sought refuge from the corona virus here.
Governor Newsome relaxed the stay at home directive for our county and opened up BnB and resort lodging again, and other services with limited
customer capacity.
This is in spite of the fact that over half of the total reported cases have occurred since the first week of December. The good news is that our
medical facilities are doing ok! I only mention this for planning purpose, not to discourage you from making the trip.
By the way, all my Truckee river fishing was on the California side, between Tahoe and Truckee.
