Mexican Medicines
I am just wondering, is anyone of you taking Mexican medication? if so, are they the same as in the US or would you say Mexican medicine is safe in
most cases?
I have a friend from LA that wants me to get him medication here, and i am just concerned about his safety, i take Mexican medication all the time and
had no problems but i would appreciate some info.

Safe in Most Cases is my feeling
I used to get inhalers for my dad in Mexico for his emphysema. The name was the same on the medication, but the stuff they mix it with, the filler or
propellant was different than what he bought here. He said it tasted a little different, but the end result in helping his breathing was fine. His
medication was all pretty generic stuff that had been around for a long time in both countries and he had the approval of his doctor. His doc said
you'll know right away if it works.
I think you are right to be concerned about your friends safety though, especially if it's a product like Viagra or diet pills or whatever that no one
should take unless they are under a doctor's care.
I would think that if you buy the stuff for your friend from your pharmacy, there shouldn't be a problem with the medicine itself, as you say, it
works for you.
I think that in Algodones, where medicine is a HUGE business, a lot of people would be saying something and I haven't heard anything other than "It's
quite a bit cheaper"
Also, I had a family member living in La Paz who took insulin. No difference there, it worked just fine too. (Duh, otherwise there would be a heck of
a lot of dead Mexican Diabetics!!)

I take thyroid meds and get them cheaper in Mexico. I've found lately that the price has become a factor even at Mexican pharmacies. The difference
between the highest and lowest price pharmacies in Nogales is huge! When I lived in La Paz, I always got a good deal at the govt. run ISSTE pharmacy.
As far as quality, I believe it's generally the same, but doctors and pharmacies here are often biased and badmouth Mexican pharmaceuticals just to
keep people from fleeing to the cheaper alternatives or out of fear of the unknown.
The same goes for dental work in Mexico. Most large towns have state of the art practitioners, but to hear the American dentists tell it, the work
they see coming in is bad. But the fact is that the only work they see coming in is going to be the bad work or work that has failed over time. The
person who got the well done crown in Nogales has no reason to go to the dentist and tell him where he got his dental work done. The person who got
the bad work done in Mexico will make a point of saying it, therefor dentists get the impression that dental work done in Mexico is generally not up
to stuff when in fact they're just seeing a tiny portion of the work that's been done there.
I wouldn't worry about getting those meds at all.-Stephanie

I used to work for a multi-nacional in DF (Ciba-Geigy, now Novartus) that was into phamaceuticals, however I was in another division. Many of the
drugs made in Mexico are made under licensee agreement with either the companies still holding the patent or simply another company. In these cases I
think the QC is pretty tight and there shouldn't be much variation.
I guess I'm saying that it depends. If it's something generic and it's being made by or through a major company I don't think there'd be a problem.
If it's not too personal, could you tell us what it is?

What are the Legalities?
Are you talking about medicines only available by prescription? It is my understanding that prescription medication is only legal with script from a
Mexican Doctor....at least for Americans.
How is it that you would be able to purchase prescription medicines for someone else?

Well you see, you can buy medicine online from Canada, all you need is a precription from a US doctor, a power of attorney, and thats it, and i am
wondering why one of the several thousand farmacias here is not doing that.
You can purchase anything in Canada even prscription medications, but you cannot buy controlled substances, like Valium.
