Rocky Mountain High

Well Bruce, I am in Colorado. North of Boulder near Lyons. Are you dreaming of snow and cool weather? We still have that here!

In preparing for my Baja kayak trip I was recently paddling on a local lake. The water temp was/is about 38 degrees and on that evening the air temperature was about 45 degrees. My fingers were frozen! Not really good prep for Baja mid-summer...

Make that 2 from Lyons.
Gringorio, at least it didn't look too windy on Carter Lake. You ever kayak the North Saint Vrain river. The runoff should be starting soon and the rapids between the old dam and the arched bridge are a real hoot. In the old days we used to run that stretch in old truck inner tubes. Now Boulder County closes that section to tubers during the spring runoff.

My wife is from Boulder and her sister lives in Steamboat up Falls Creek Road now. Her husband works for Moots building bikes. In-laws still live in Boulder so I avoid the general area.

I spent three years in Durango, 6 in Laramie and 1 in Boulder.
Frequent trips to Steamboat from Laramie in the mid 70's and early 80's.

We were in Steamboat two summers ago for a week.
Things sure have changes there since the 70's !!

We were also in Durango where things have changed even more since 1970. Good old Fort Lewis College....Purgatory, Vallacito Lake, salmon snagging, young girls....I was young then too !

The race is from Durango to Silverton.
Cyclists against the narrow gage railroad.
The railroad is still a great way to access some amazing hikes, camping, sking and kayaking. I think some of the most wonderful places in the world exists between Purgatory Ski area, Silterton and Ouray. The three passes you cross on the way through are breathtaking every time I go.
