Yes, those European rigs are outrageous aren't they? What are they thinking?
I just overlanded to the OXXO a few blocks away for a 6-pack. A couple of potholes in the asphalt. Perhaps I should have aired down.

It's a term that originated more than a 100 years ago in Australia.
Has been used here for probably 7-10 years, gaining a lot of momentum in the last 4-5 years. There are all sorts of Overlanding Expo's out there.

Aside from going oversize on tires, and minor tweaks to the suspension, my rigs have all been stock.
I enjoy the challenge of seeing just where I can go with them and get back from. It is also a lot easier on the bank account.
If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!

off road and off roading is actually the reason why the 4x4 marketing people (of almost all brands) introduced overlanding.
Off roading had achieved such a bad reputation that car makers were concerned it would hurt the sales of SUVs.
A greenwashing concept was needed.
I remember a season where one brand had an artist scribble with a sharpie over beautiful images of their truck in the wild.
To pretend it did not really happen.
No vegetation was hurt during the presentation.
A positive side effect was that "overlanding" attracted new clients who loved the idea of $500 bamboo cutting boards.
With that the last whiff of read neck sport was gone.
Overlanding claims to be environmentally responsible.

Great work!!!
I admire the drone owner's guts. I can imagine the wind challenges in some of the scenes, for such a lightweight drone.

Let's not forget history of the first 'Overland'... Willys Overland, who built the first civilian Jeep (CJ) and first four-wheel-drive station wagon,
or "SUV"...

What about Bantam?
If I have my history right, the original concept was by Bantam, an offshoot of American Austin. They were not able to meet the production demand
without major re-tooling, so they merged (or were absorbed) by Willys.
If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!

Indeed the American Bantam Car Company produced the first 'jeep' vehicle, beating Ford and Willys-Overland in answering the Army's request.
However, I was responding to the use of the word "overlanding" with the first "Overland" civilian 4x4... Willys Overland.
Here is the photo of first 'jeep' at the Bantam factory (Model #1). They next produced two more models (BRC-60 and BRC-40) for testing alongside
Ford's 'Pygmy' and 'GP' and Willys-Overland's 'Quad' and 'MA'. Several BRC-40s were shipped to Russia to help their war effort before we were in the
war.
Willys had the most powerful engine, and won in the end. However, their factory could not produce the quantity so Ford also made the Willys model,
calling it the 'GPW' from Ford. Poor American Bantam, all they were contracted to do in the end was make trailers to be pulled behind the Jeeps.
