I've only used a lure once in surf fishing. I did catch a good size spot fin croaker.

Beautiful fish. The holy grail for surf fishermen.
I didn`t quite get the holy grail yesterday (8/18), but I did get a slob Calico Bass. I caught 6 and kept only this one. He went 22" and will be enjoyed in tacos and Veracruz-style fish. I had to get him up a 30' cliff and barely was able to.

Do you have a special recipe for Veracruz style fish. It's my favorite when eating out.

Wow, that's an impressive catch! I've been trying to target White Seabass from the shore, but haven't had much luck. Curious, what kind of rig and bait did he use?

A good surf bait is Berkley sand worms Its best to dry them out in the sun for a few hours as it makes them a lot tougher and they stay on the hook better. It doesn't hurt their ability to attract fish however.

2 oz sinker on the bottom with 2 or 3 hooks up the line.
Seems to work real well in Oregon for red tail perch in the surf.
