Guadalupe Canyon
Mi yerno wants to take my daughter and their two boys down to Guadalupe Canyon. Any word on when it’s expected to open? Camping fees? Road
condition? Gracias.
Two dirt roads diverged in Baja and I, I took the one less graveled by......

Hi Paul, let me share some links to the canyon for you and anyone else interested. Personally, I have not camped there since late 2008. The family
members who ran the campsites on the south side of the canyon, and also the source spring, above Arturo's Campo #1 (with all the nice private
campsites), forced Arturo to close his side. I suspect jealousy... as Arturo's always had business and they wanted it. Arturo was getting pretty old
and his wife wasn't well... so not too much of a debate. Everything ends at some point, right?

The left side of the canyon, as you are driving in, remains closed due to tropical storm Kay on October 10,2022. Ernesto Loya passed away in 2022,
DEP. His family is still working on repairs to reopen their side of the canyon.
The right side of the canyon is Arturo's side, and I believe Mario's further upstream. It was closed for a couple months, but reopened. At first it
required 4WD to get there through the newly deposited deep sand. I'm not up to date this month about the condition of the road.
Weekends and holidays get crowded, with reservations needed. If you can arrange for mid-week, you will likely not need a reservation and have a
more tranquil experience.
Upon entering the canyon, you will turn right at this sign:

It has been several years since Arturo was in the canyon... and I would bet he has left us for that other oasis, in the sky. His son-in-law 'Canyonman
Rob' and daughter, Isabela, stopped arranging tour trips and the campground's website was taken down.
Ernesto (?) or another brother or nephew, had forced Arturo to abandon his side (Campo #1) by shutting off the hot water pipe, from the source spring,
above/ outside of Arturo's property. This was late 2008 or 2009, (I think). Arturo was old, his wife was ill, and his helper son (who maintained the
campsites between campers use) 'Rigo,' was mentally challenged (and blamed for starting one of the fires that burned the palms and some palapas).
The other campsites were never as nice or as private as Arturo's (that were originally begun and made by John Nelson with his son Jordan, later help
came from a friend Steve Schott, and Canyonman Rob).
A couple-few years ago, some of those nice campsites of Arturo's were reopened by the relatives from across the canyon... and we see them included on
the reservations list and the map that once was on the original website, but instead of Arturo's Campo 1 at the top of the map, they edited to name
Arturo's dad, Don José Campo 1!
