We live at the south end in BCS so we did a road trip to the north end. Anyone recognize the picture?

JD,
It looked like it was out of business! Tofino was jammed with yuppy tourists. Is BC Hydro giving big EV rebates? There were more Teslas in Vancouver
than in LA!

Yes, Tofino has become a Yuppie "storm watching" destination and locals now have a hard time finding a place to park to walk the beaches. Annual
rainfall tends to be about 3-4 times what we get in Nanaimo annually, so if you want storms, fog banks and rain, this is the place to go on the
island. Prince Rupert up the coast further is the wettest city in Canada and you can jump off to Alaska ferries or the ferry back down to the island
from there for some interesting circle trips.

Stewart/Hyder is an interesting side trip by ferry, or from the Cassiar highway. Shop in Canada...drink in Alaska!

Decades ago we took the BC ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert and drove to Hanes Alaska over what is now BC 37 but was then a dirt loging road.
For the detailed oriented readers. The loging road connected with the Alaskan Hwy near Watson Lake and goes through Hanes Junction BC.

Been there, done that...the dock and yellow house behind that dock is my old house and dock that I had built.
I was fortunate to move to Tofino well before tourism was a thing. It was a fishing and logging town and a beautiful & fun place to live then with
a very eclectic population. The weather left alot to be desired and when Americans bought up land there, most of the fun people had to leave as they
couldnt affort to live there and taxes skyrocketed...they got on the town council and started bringing in silly bylaws, which is when I bailed. But it
was truly beautiful.

Back in the 20th century I did a great kayak trip from Tofino northward to hot springs cove and points north. Ate a lot of oysters and clams and
muscles, easy picking off the rocks and beaches. Hot springs cove was fairly undeveloped at the time,… it now has park amenities and I think
people fly in by float planes to soak. At the time I paddled there we saw no one…

Goat,
California has good scenery, too many people and poor governance. Gas is almost a buck a gallon more than Oregon though not as bad as BC. Did you know
they (BC) make bars collect a 10% tax on alcohol in addition to the 5% BC and 7% Federal taxes?

I totally agree with your assessment. I use to work in the bush near Tofino. It was a great little logging / fishing town with lots of unique
characters. Now it is “Little California “. I like to refer to it as the “land of the $8 hot chocolate “.
You have Federal Park attendants walking around with sidearms to make sure you pay your parking fees. They don’t need a sidearm! A shotgun in the
truck incase of bear or cougar problems is much logical.
Not really a “ Bajanomad rant type” but your comment set me off. I miss the real Tofino.

I hadn’t been there for 20 years and the Wife had never been there. It’s changed from a place where people went camping on the beach to a
“destination”. I didn’t see many “Californians” wondering around. A majority of the plates were BC. I couldn’t see inside the private
communities that replaced the beach camping spots though.
The float planes and boats were missing from the harbor and the restaurant down at Long Beach is gone.
This was at the water front! Not, in my opinion an “improvement”!
