Thats the point I'm trying to make. You need a Fm-2 0r 3 to obtain a Mexican drivers license. They won't give a drivers license to someone who is in Mexico illegally.

I've got an FM but certainly didn't need it for a drivers license. All they cared about was getting the fees. Didn't even ask for ID.;D

If you want, next time i'll get one for you. (If you don't mind being my twin brother.)

Dave what did you have to do to get your license? Did you have to give up your U.S license? How much $$ Thanks.

As far as needing an FM for the license I have heard varrying accounts. Some say you absolutely need an FM, others say dmv never asked for it. I'm going off of what I've heard so I could be totally wrong about the FM thing.

Never asked me for a thing. Not even an ID to prove who I was. That doesn't mean your experience will be the same.

I think it was 340 pesos for two years.

Way Back When..........

Well, not that far back, but prior to the Government asking (demanding ?) that we get our FM3s, the driver's license procedure was somewhat like Dave describes. You took your U.S. license and two ID photos down to the DMV, paid your money and got a license. Two neighbors of mine did exactly that.
Perhaps it's still that easy (somewhere). The elasticity of the Mexican bureaucracy is endearing.

Different subject, but back in the mid 80s some neighbors of mine who also owned a house at Rene's in Rosarito had a friend move into the camp who wanted a telephone. They informed her that there was a minimum six-month wait and they didn't yet have theirs. She drove into Tijuana, came back and said they were installing her phone on Monday. My friends asked how that could be and she replied that the guy wanted a hundred dollar bribe and she gave it to him. You just have to love that system.
