Mexican Fireworks
Boy is this topic relevent to my experiences in Baja. As a life-long pyro I must share a little bit of the past. I'm not quite sure at what age I
started getting fireworks and "Horsechit" cigarettes but I was around 14. My dad would always drag us down to Tijuana to shop and pick up booze for
himself. I started bringing cherry-bombs and cracker-balls back three or four times a year. I loved finding the stores that had them. I always had to
ask to see them as they were typically out of sight. I loved some of the unique types like the triangle firechackers, the dangerous sky rockets and
myriad others.
As a young enthusiastic idiot I borrowed my folks car while they were away and drove down and filled the car with a variety of 'works' including many
"bricks" of firecrackers. While just crossing over the border the transmission burned up and we barely coasted off the highway. Now what do I do with
a carload of "works"?

we just bought some
from a traveling salesman at La Fonda at the campground....he had all kinds and when we told him we wanted bigger ones he took off and came back with
the ones that look like dynamite tied to a three foot long stick...the fuses on these really sucked,they never stay lit...one went off about 10 feet
from the ground which had caused quite a scare for us but really excited all the other campers

Lefty says, almost anything you like, but they are illegal in baja sur. There is a good store for them in chapultepec. and another in San Felipe.
Those guys are going to be getting a few of my green backs in the next few days.

Dirt, we had a name for those as kids. It ended in chasers.

ahhh, yes. those are/were some of the greatest bombs ever. 20 years ago we'd cut the bomb of the stick and put them in our socks, underwear, etc...
the sticks went into our cold wet wetsuits and we never got caught. back at the ranch-we lived above the frontier drive-in in point loma. during the
feature presentation we'd tape one or two back together and set them in the bush on the canyon edge, pointed towards the screen parallel to the
ground. they'd make it about 3/4 of the way before they exploded about 50 feet off the ground. great fun...

It would be interesting to know exactly what the law is supposed to be regarding the use of fireworks in and around San Felipe, among other places. I
have yet to get a straight answer.
I do know that at least one of my neighbors believes it is illegal. Last year when he was setting them off in his front yard, I told him with the
next blast I was going to pick up my Cel Phone and call the law in San Felipe. It probably would have accomplished nothing, but he stopped so he
thought it was illegal.

So what goes on in Baja on the 4th, is it a gringo thing? Does anything happen? I have no idea and never gave it any thought.

I know for a fact that there is a major Fireworks retail shop, north of town. Has bout everything in there except for the Titan Missile! Perhaps it's
cool to shoot em off in the desert or on the beaches away from town? If can not find any legal answers on this, from the www

Fireworks
50 "pennyrockets" fired into the outhouse at K38 1/2 while holding our dear friend in there on a surf outing. Hysterical!!
On the down side and much later in life I have seen these,
1 wrist burned to the bone when the skyrocket stuck to his hand.
6 year old with totally blackend face while Dad lights bomb.
Ours and most dogs are terrified from them.
Countless stories about fireworks accidents from living here.
Nowadays, they have balls launched out of tubes that put everything we were accostumed to to shame and available everywhere in Rosarito. . Almost
like Disneyland or Seaworld!
They are legal in most parts of Baja Norte unless specifically posted in a specific enclave. Gaviotas is one of those. But, usually alcohol is
involved by the time it's worth lighting them and that's when things get burned down and people get hurt. Some communities have taken precautions,
probably because of past incidents.
What a mixed message eh? Be extremely careful when playing with these things and I ain't lieing!

I don't use them anymore but all be damed if I'm going to tell the Mexican people here to change there laws and not to do the things that they enjoy
like the San Felipe beach club dose.
