BAJA CHILI COOKOFF FIRES UP ON SEPTEMBER 18!

ENSENADA, BAJA CALIFORNIA, MEXICO - Ready to spice up your life and heat up your soul? Then be sure to head south of the border on Sunday, September 18, 2005 for J.D. Hussong?s 29th Annual Baja Regional International Chili Cookoff from noon-6PM. The spicy event takes place at Quintas Papagayo Resort, 1 1/2 miles north of Ensenada at Carr. Tijuana-Ensenada Km. 108. Located only seventy miles south of the international border, the seaport of Ensenada is a convenient 90-minute drive from San Diego along a scenic toll highway.

In addition to being the first south-of-the-border cookoff sanctioned by the International Chili Society, Hussong?s Chili Cookoff is Baja California?s oldest international culinary competition. The event attracts dozens of contestants from the United States and Mexico whose goal is to produce the best bowl of red chili (no beans) within a 3-hour cooking period. This year there will be two chili-cooking classifications: one is for members of the International Chili Society (ICS) and the other is an ?open? contest for non-members. The first place winners of each classification will receive a trophy, cash prize and Weekend For Two in Ensenada at Quintas Papagayo. The ICS first place winner also will attain eligibility to compete for $25,000 at the 2005 International Chili Society World?s Championship Chili Cookoff in Omaha, Nebraska. Second and third place winners will receive trophies, as will People?s Choice Chili and Best Booth.

J.D. Hussong?s 13th Annual Salsa Contest is equally challenging as cooks compete for the Overall Best Salsas Award by preparing two categories of salsa: vegetable and fruit. The overall winner will receive a commemorative plaque and a Weekend For Two at Quintas Papagayo.

While the aroma of chili fills the air, contestants and spectators can enjoy line dance and folkloric dance exhibitions; norte?o songs by Juan Mart?n; acoustic rock, pop and original music by Scott BeSaw & Jon Allmett; and Ms. Chile Pepper, Se?or Hot Salsa and Serrano Chile Eating competitions conducted by the Masters of Ceremonies, Brent and Gina BeSaw. Savory Mexican foods, Corona beer, Hussong margaritas, raffles, and colorful arts and crafts booths add even more zest to the fiesta atmosphere. General admission is $10 dlls., which includes chili and salsa tasting, raffles, and 5 coupons for drinks or regional food samples prepared by Baja California restaurants. Sponsors of this unique bicultural event include Corona Beer, the Baja California State Secretary of Tourism, the Ensenada Tourism Board, Victor Premiaciones, COFOTURE, CANIRAC, and Viejas Casino of Alpine, California. Proceeds benefit Ensenada?s CRREAD Drug & Alcohol Abuse Rehabilitation Center, a nonprofit organization.
