Pavarotti
If you're one of us plebeyos who want to enjoy this event, I hope you already have your ticket. If not, you may be SOL. Of course if you're
one of those popofswho always have a private balcony at the Met and attend wearing a tacuche, not to worry. The press agent for the
organizing committee says there are still tickets available for the Platinum section at $6,000 pesos, the Gold section at $4,000 pesos and the Orange
at $2,000 pesos. Holders of Platinum & Gold tickets may enjoy an exclusive pre-concert pavillion where they will find restaurants, bars & tobacco
shops. At the conclusion of the concert, holders of Platinum tickets will enjoy an exclusive "VIP Platino After Party".

Oso,
Have you any idea where at/on Laguna Salada this will be? Will they access from the same place the lakebed road heading south is? (I'm not talking
about the graded road at the base of the Rumerosa grade)
It just defies logic that they would have an event of such magnitude in a location akin to the moon, in the middle of nowhere.
Has anyone checked this out to see what they are building? It's only 8 days away.
Inquiring minds(y) want to know!

I haven't been there to check it out yet, but my tickets (in the $400 peso green section about a football field's length from the stage) say it's at
KM 21 on the Mexicali-TJ highway, which should be the same as Mex 2. So, it's probably about where you see the top tip of Laguna Salada at the Hwy.
Even though the spokesman didn't say so in the paper, I'd guess there are still $100 peso, bring your own chair and binoculars, tickets available.

Jeans, as I was assuming this was a hoax, I asked Hotschott (who goes to Guadalupe Canyon monthly or more). They ARE building a stage, etc. From what
Steve said, it is not on the dry lake bed itself, but on the desert floor near the shoreline, off the dry lake bed access (the road by the solar
array). You and the Baja Gals can give a better description upon your return.
Oso, when is the event?

Pavarotti loves elephants
For those who can't make it to the live performance, here's an online aria from the maestro:

Saturday the 18th, David. The fat guy sings at sunset, just after 6:00 but there are other things happening from noon on.

With music from Il Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi - La Donna e' Mobile (Woman is Unpredictable) one of the most famous arias in opera.

I read on a Mexicali site that they're expecting attendance to be as high as 40,000.
I also read that special guests include Salma Hayek (sp?), Ricky Martin & Gloria Estefan.
...and more: "The promoters have indicated that there are plans to release the concert as a DVD and that they are (in) negotiation with SKY TV to
broadcast the concert in America and Europe."

Another interesting side note as to the intensity building for this event... about 10% of the incoming traffic on this site right now is from people
searching for: "fiesta del sol mexicali"
(or some similar variant)

I've heard many stories of Pavarotti backing out of concerts at the last minute. I can see the desert dust being a problem for an aging tenor's
throat.

Latest from Hotschott
I talked with Steve today and he said they ARE having the event ON the LAKE BED... not the desert floor! He said the recent rain had made the lake muddy and IF there was any more rain, it would be a disaster. They were
grading sloped seating areas in the lake bed silt, and had added extra lanes along the highway for lines of cars waiting to turn off to the event. The
site is on the Laguna Salada just west of the dry lake road for Guadalupe Canyon, about 2 1/2 miles east of the signed graded road to Guadalupe
Canyon.
Have fun you opera people!

Pavarotti
Here is one source Mr. Anonymous (come out so we can see you!)
I had tix for La Boheme in San Francisco about 10 years ago and he bailed. As I remember, Placido flew in by private Lear to fill the bill.
And, my late sister was general manager of the world's most famous concert hall for 15 years. (no names here, but those who know me know where and
when)
She loved old Luciano a bunch but he was totally unreliable in making all of his performances. (as was Lenny B who had to be "babysat" the night
before concerts)
Unreliable, but oh what a voice!!
Well worth the uncertainty of his showing up.
Baja Vida!!
