On my recent trip to Bahia de Los Angeles my AT&T Met Life system had a signal on most of Hiway 1, but was roaming a few miles south of the border. I got many different answers to 3 basic questions I posed to AT&T before I left: 1) would I get a signal? 2) if so, would I be roaming? 3) What is the cost of a call, reciving or sending? As I never made or received a call while roaming, I can't answer #3; however, the highest estimate I received from AT&T was $1.90 per minutes if I were roaming.

Using a cell phone in Baja is expensive anyway you do it, including having a second Telcel or Movistar number in the phone as I do.

One trick might be of assistance if you have trouble getting out and have an AT&T phone card. Dial 001-800-462-4240 and that will give you AT&T in the states. Just dial your desired number in the regular long distance fashion, punch in your card number when asked and you should get through.

Hope this helps.

Cell Phones

You can rent a cell phone from Baja Search and Rescue which uses Telcel services. There are many areas of Baja where cell phones don't work. This is where Baja Search and Rescue comes in. For more information, email jrbaja@hotmail.com.

Verizon service all the way to the gas station in EL Rosario. I haven't tried below Bahia de Los Angeles. Verizon cost is about US$ 1.30 per minute. I can send and receive with no problem
