Find the marine charts for the route; research the tides, currents, weather; get a GPS; talk to the fishermen who go out in those waters. Know where you can land once you reach the land points. (You don't want to be at the end of your rope and face high stone cliffs and have another mile or two before you reach a landing point.) A marine chart or fisherman will tell you where you can land. Start at first light or sooner when it's calm and figure on 3 mph unless you're faced with a headwind. Armed with knowledge of the characteristics of the crossings (currents, prevailing winds) and luck with the weather, coupled with strong kayaking skills (endurance, ability to handle swells and chop) will be your best assets. Even with the best information, if you don't know how to handle your boat, get hypothermia, carpal tunnel, have to wait out the wind and run out of water, or don't know how to interpret and understand the situation at hand, you face serious hardships.
