I was told once that butterflies can detect an opposite member of their species for miles away. Any truth to that or a fable ??

The only goal in life for an adult butterfly is to reproduce. Depending on the concentration of the female pheromones (scent), male butterflies of many species can detect the female from over a mile away or about 2 kilometers. The antennae are used for olfactory recognition as well as balance in flight. It's worth noting that some species of moths are sensitive to the presence of the female pheromone up to three miles away or five kilometers.

I read somewhere that female Asian elephants, the largest living land animals, release the same pheromones as those of at least 100 species of butterflies and moths.
