Hellmann's Mayonnaise
Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the
condiment scheduled for landing in New York and further transport and delivery to Ensenada, Mexico.
This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever
delivered to Mexico. But as we know, the great ship did not even make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever
lost.
The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so
great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.
The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as
Sinko de Mayo

The topic on this one should be Cinco de Mayo! You know who likes Cinco de Mayo the best...the beer distributors in the US. In every restaurant and
grocery it's Corona, Corona, Corona....with a few Tecates thrown in.

Cinco de Mayo
is observed wildly not mildly in the border towns - TJ and Rosarito in my direct experience.
Just another bars-marketing-a-party-to-sell booze tool. There are plenty of willing participants, from whatever side of the border.

Hellman's Mayo in Mexico
I have never liked the packaged mayo distributed in the US.
I have made my own mayo for years.
I love the Mexican made Hellman's with the limon picture (lime added).
Best sandwich ever: Good crusty bread, like a french baguette (I don't particularly like Mexican bolillos, but that could be the fault of the
bakeries I know), sliced into thirds.
Add crisp bacon, fresh ripe sliced tomatoes, sweet tender romaine leaves, ripe sliced avocado (preferably Haas).
Spread Hellman's and McCormack chipotle mayo on the cut sides of the sliced bread.
Layer in the other ingredients a gusto.
Press and slice into manageable sections.
Enjoy with a fruity glass of Mexican red wine (or other refreshment of choice), and, I hope that you enjoy this sandwich while you are looking out at
a beautiful Baja land and/or seascape.

HELLMAN'S and BESTFOODS--------
-----I believe that "Hellman's" mayo is exactly the same as "Best Foods" mayo. It is marketed as "Hellman's" in the eastern USA, and "Best Food's" in
the western USA.
If this is not right, then I stand corrected.

I was just pointing out that the folks in Ensenada would have been disappointed EVEN if the Titanic HAD made port in New York, as the expected
"Hellmanns Mayo" would never had made it out west.

...The Mayonnaise Jar and 2 Cups of Coffee
When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 cups of coffee.
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and
empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between
the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if he jar
was full. The students responded with an unanimous "Yes."
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space
between the sand. The students laughed.
"Now, " said the professor as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important
things....God, your family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favorite passions---and if everything else was lost and only they
remained, your life would still be full."
"The pebbles are the other things that matter--your job, your house, and your car."
"The sand is eveything else---the small stuff."
"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend
all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you."
"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out
to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first---the things that
really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked."
"It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple cups of coffee with a friend."
