Let's talk YAKIMA racks.....
My camper has Yakima racks on it.....the standard 2 long tracks and 2 sets of crossbars.....just the basic setup.
Is there anything special to strap surfboards on with? I see many adapters for bikes, kyacks,snow boards, luggage pods...nothing for surfboards.
Has anybody made their own "straps" out of common hardware store materials?
And who has had "things" blow off into the road while driving  .....remember you
can always say "I had a friend who did (fill in blank)....if you don't want to admit doing it yourself...

Permanence for a surfer ?? Wow dude ! 
I've seen guys retrofit ski carriers with the rigid top bar by increasing the spacing. You can make this set-up lockable but it makes more wind noise
driving around.

I would get something to pad the bar and use a couple of cambuckle straps long enought to go over, around the bar and back. That's what we use to tie
on canoes, kayaks, etc. I bought a set of Yakima cradles to haul my sea kayaks for $70 a pair back in the early '90s and they didn't even include the
straps. Those were $25 extra. I made my own out of $5 cambuckle straps and they have been doing the job for years. If you haven't noticed, Yakima
and Thule accessories are a real rip off. I wish I was making that kind of money.

diver....I thought I have seen something like what you describe....didn't know it was modified ski setup....
Rich....you bet it is expensive...that's why I was thinking something homemade...
I saw the Yakima strap at the store...and then also saw $20 pad for the bottom...extra of course...

I use the heavy duty bungee cords for surfboards and the ratchet straps for kayaks. Lots of offroad, have not lost anything yet. Actually purchased
the Yakima surf latch . It's in a box somewhere? I did not want a 'permanent' mount because I change the configuration- 1 board one yak- 1 board 2
yaks - two boards 1 yak and so forth.
