Howard Gulick Maps: Baja 1962

Here is Map 5 (San Quintin to Catavi?a)...

Maps found in the Lower Califonia Guidebook by Peter Gerhard and Howard E. Gulick. Permission to display online granted by the Arthur H. Clark Company.

Map 5 shows the area where the great adventure of driving down Baja began for most...

Of course back then there was no town of San Quintin or Lazaro Card##as along 'Hwy. 1' (the main Baja road) nor a Catavi?a other than an abandoned rancho near San Luis and Santa Ines.

Pavement ended way north of San Quintin back then, near Colonet...

Pavement arrived in 1973!

In July, 1973 pavement ended near El Progreso but just 5 months later it had extended south to meet the advancing pavement coming north from Santa Roasalia that year. Construction crews met at San Ignacito (near Catavi?a) where a monument marks the occaision.

Here is the same map with the new highway located on it...
