Well schiesse! Didn't see that coming. Neither did most Germans, I think. But, Klinsman is coaching, not playing and I don't think home field advantage will carry them past the Italians on Tuesday. It did go all the way to penalties but a win is a win and close only counts in horse-shoes. I understand the Argentine coach committed sepuku immediately after the game. Good ref for a change. Did what a good ref should; talk first, card only when necessary.

The second game of the day went pretty much as expected. The only surprise was that Ukraine got as far as they did.

Probly just as well I have no bets out. I'm still looking for Brazil to take the Cup, only the final will be against Italy. If the Frogs beat the Cariocas, I'll quit guessing. Portugal/England should be a good dust-up. Both have a rep for getting physical. I'm still going with Portugal on that one. The Brits have Beckham, but not much else.

Oso,

You need to get out of the prediction business - you suck!:lol::lol::lol: So much so, that I'm now worried that you may have jinxed Italy, which is (as I said before) looking pretty good. Better than they have in years.

Regarding the referees - you are aware that FIFA is changing the rules of the game, and that the imposition of the cards is mandated? And that the refs are being evaluated for membership during the World Cup?

If you can point me to the section of the rules where it says that, upon an infraction, the ref should "talk" to the player before imposting a sanction, hats off - 'cause it ain't there! :wow:

You may disagree with them, but those ARE the rules. Take the USA - Italy game. Many cards, right? Take, again the Italy - Australia game. Many fewer cards, right? Both were very physical games, so what's the difference? I'll tell you - the game with the socceroos was a clean game, the game with the US just plain dirty, and ugly. It's not the refs. And this is one of the aspects of the ESPN commentators that peees me off the most.

OK, I guess I've been listening too much to the ESPN guys and some of it has seeped through to the point I'm repeating it. Bad karma. From here on, I'll go back to Univision. I guess I was just glad to hear play by play (more or less) in my first language. It is an improvement over 4 and 8 years ago when the American commentators didn't even pay attention to what was happening on the field but just prattled on with irrelevant anecdotes.

ALL my predictions haven't been wrong. Only, like maybe half???

I'll stop now and just watch.

What ever happened to Toto Scilacci and his cuerno problem?

Portugal 3-1 on penalties. Once again it comes down to the better goalie... and luck.

No more predictions.

My only comment now is: The way this whole tournament has been played, Greg Louganis would have been MVP.

OK, I too bow before greatness...:moon:

(I didn't say in which direction)

Tequila score: So far, I've delivered one bottle to Dave, one to Ferna, collected one from Ferna and hold markers for two others owed me. That's 3 for 2.

I guess I won't even try to bet on today's elections.

Anybody pulled out pesos to hold cash dollars? (Y'know a dollar account in a Mexican bank won't protect you from a peso devaluation and the banks have probably already put a freeze on pulling dollars out anyway...)

If, and that's a BIG if, we'll see how the frogs stand up to a team with defense with only ONE forward.:lol::lol:

Look, Zidane is a great player - sees the whole field, like few players do, but he can't win the game on his own. And while Henri's goal was spectacular, let's face it - there was a great deal of luck there. They are very good at controlling the game, but did you guys SEE Italy today? Or Germany for that matter? A whole difference level of game, I think. They DID show that by controlling the midfield, and shutting down Ronaldinho (did he even play against them), Brasil has nowhere to go.

I ain't making any predictions - but, as I said right after the first game, Italy is looking VERY good this year. Italy is a country of brilliant individuals who can't get their act together in therms ok playing together. The same is true of the soccer team. THIS year, they are playing together, have a coach who is not afraid to risk and attack, so WATCH OUT.

Hey, with all the 'threat of suspension' BS, I'm now just trying to figure out how to back up my 12-1 futures bet on the Frogs.

(Of course, Portugal's sortta in the same boat.)

Alemania 3-1

The game for 3rd place is always anticlimactic per se and the first half was so boring I nodded off a couple times. But I'm glad I woke up for the 2nd half in time to see some pretty futbol.

Two beautiful long shots by the pig foreman on either side of an almost comical own goal by Petit, I think. Then at the end Portugal redeemed itself with a gorgeous diving header for the "gol de honor". Sweet. Now the Germans have an excuse to drink some bier:lol:
