Caving in to mordida is easy
The goons got me. Just like I've seen em get many unsuspecting Gringos. Sitting on their bikes watching the cars merge at the exit off the toll road
in TJ. Well, they couldn't miss me either. AS my truck slowed to merge with the others they were quick to escort me down the hill so they could extort
money.
The young officer (his buddy busy now w/his own catch nearby) approached and politely asked for my Lic and reg. I handed him my Mulege and Oregon Lic
and he haneed me a sheet of paper with all the various penalties for exceeding the speed limit. I told him that I just reduced my speed as I exited
normally. He insisted I was going 60 in a 40. So he says "you can follow me to the station to pay the fine." I thought hmmmm, is he bluffing or not,
hmmmm? I asked him how he clocked my speed as he was stationary. He said he could tell by the rate of my speed vrersus the rate of the cars on the
other off ramp. It made absolutely no sense and he just kept pointing to the fine amount on the paper.
Now I have to decide, shall I call his bluff and follow him the Station or shall I seek to cross the Border as planned on my schedule. I really
thought hard because I just wanted to get moving after 10 hrs on the road.
As he stood waiting for my answer(I guess that's what he was waiting for) I said "shall I just pay you mordida and go.? He says "WHAT?" I says "Sir ,
would you kindly pay the fine for me?" Then he looks down a my wallet and says "how much you got" I open the billfold revealing a U.S $20 bill and a
coulple of ones. He gives me this odd look like where the hell is all the money? Then I tell him that I just SPENT ALL my money in his country. I take
the $20 out and roll it up and place it in his hand. THen I say"Thanks for taking care of the ticket." He nods and puts away the ticket book that had
various marked from past efforts, hopped on his bike and was waiting for his buddy to complete his deal when I sped off.

Looks like "ticketing" is a lot easier than chaseing kidnappers in Rosarito.....

What you do in the first five minutes counts!
And it is hard for Americans to accept the fact that in all of the so called
"third world", the mordita or gratuity system is the accepted norm.
Besides, any ticket that involves a moving violation is going to cost at least $100 to resolve in the US. To me, a $20 payoff seems like a good deal!!

Maybe so Jerry but I used to pay the Maillady for stamps years ago. Hmmmm, maybe I shouldn't have. I figured she had to be a representative(and a
legit one at that.) Like I said, I thought real hard. I guess the right thang would be to test the system and go to the station. I felt out-gunned
and he knew it. I always felt that if I got set up like that for the mordida I WOULD call them at their game. Alas, I caved. Funny thing is, aswrong
as it may be. why should I pay the same money to the maybe crooked chief??? And maybe more than $20. But who knows maybe something good would of
happened. For 20 bucks I didn't care to gamble. Surely that cop will pay my fine dutifully.

hes not going to stop his illagal system its working for him and the next time he wont settle for less then $50.00 i have been in your position and
gave it a thought my gambel paid off he let me go

great for ya corky how many times you go fishing while fixin the water leaks??
im not too smart i installed a battery operated system and its working too well the person checking on it says works like a charm so i have no
reason for a emergency trip

Jerr, it was more like a turnaround trip. I did wet my wick briefly and lost all my gear pronto to sumpin' grande!
A battery operated drip system? Someone spliced into my water line and used 42,5000 gals last month. Dat's some water leak!!!

Somewhere on this forum there's a post or article that said every bike cop in TJ has to pay the chief $50 each morning to check out his bike, hit the
road (said there were 1500 bike cops). First couple of stops he needs to get the $50 back. La Sistema along the border is big business, serious
business and trouble could surely come you're way if you "test the system", if you do not give the authorities room to move, space and time to make
decisions. How you play it is up to you but there are risks deep down you can't see on the surface. Discretion is the skinniest part of valor but I
think Sharks did the right thing "at that moment".
