THIS coming Friday-Sunday: El Rosario Festival '06 Event Schedule

Get ready to party in a REAL Baja town!

El Rosario has been the gateway to adventure, where the telephone line from Ensenada and mail delivery both ended before pavement arrived in 1973.

Antonio Mu?oz' family and Mama Espinoza's family have provided fuel, lodging and assistance to travelers for over 100 combined years...

Take a look at the schedule of events and go back to the posts from other Nomads from last year...

===========================================================

I can tell you that it really impressed the locals when so many of us Norteamericano Baja Nomads attended last year!

This event was created by Baja Nomad member 'BajaCactus' (Antonio Mu?oz) who operates the Pemex station and Baja Cactus Motel in El Rosario... who is so busy he hasn't had much chance to get online here!

Camping on the sand beach of La Bocana, 5 miles west of town or at the Sinahi RV Park (behind the Sinahi Motel and the La Bocana Beach Restaurant) #28 on map.

The deluxe rooms at Baja Cactus are all reserved, there may be some of the smaller commercial rooms available, #1 on map.

Other motels are Mama Espinoza's Las Caba?as (next door to Baja Cactus, #2 on map), and Primo's Motel Sinahi (#28 on map) a mile down the highway... Two miles down is Baja's Best Bed and Breakfast (#38 on map), as well.

Come on down amigos (or come up if you are to the south) next Friday and join in the celebration of the birth of a town (July, 1774, Mision Nuestra Se?ora del Rosario was founded).

Different this year is the location of the festival inauguration... last year it was at the first mission site just off Hwy. 1.

This year it will be at the second mission site in El Rosario de Abajo... Turn west off Hwy. 1 at the sharp curve (just past Mama Espinoza's) in less than 500 feet is a fork, turn left or south (straight ahead is the best way to La Bocana Beach, 5 miles).

You cross over a culvert (Rio del Rosario) and follow road that turns right/west following the river and in some of the river... Don't worry, it's all firm, every car in town drives through here!

You come out of the river bed on the south side... in the 'other' town of El Rosario (Abajo). The second mission site is a short distance on the right. This road continues to the coast at Punta Baja and other points south. A 4WD access to La Bocana Beach, as well.

Here's the distance from Hwy. 1 to Rosario de Abajo mission ruins:

0.0 Turn Right off Hwy. 1 at the sharp left curve. In about 100 yards take the left (south) fork... signed for Punta Baja.

Cross over the El Rosario River culvert and follow main road as it turns right (west) and crosses some water before reaching the south bank and entering the town of El Rosario de Abajo.

1.5 El Rosario Museum on left (Open Mon.-Fri. 9-6, Sat., Sun. 10-3) Photos inside at http://vivabaja.com/505/page6.html

1.6 Rosario de Abajo mission ruins on right.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Photo of last year's inauguration... Antonio ('BajaCactus') is at the podium speaking to the town elders (including Mama Espinoza, holding microphone)... Beauty contestants standing behind...

So far, only a few Nomads have mentioned they are going to the festival... John M, Bajaandy, Doug (Baja Nomad), and Meme? Is that correct? Would love to see more of us showing up to support the event...

See Baja Nomad Trip Reports forum for many photos of area attractions (petrified forest, sea lion crater, beach, petroglyphs, fossils, cactus forests, missions, mines, museums, restaurants, motels).

San Felipe is hot! El Rosario being just 5 miles from the cold Pacific is always very nice!

Remember that Antonio is hosting all Nomads to a special meal Saturday afternoon... See you there!

Here was the meal last year, in the motel office...

David and gang,

It's looking like I will not be able to make it as I have a small group I am driving to Puerto Penasco (in the middle of the summer!). But they hired me to escort them. Gor anyone who's never been there, it's a good time in an authentic Baja town. Antonio of Baja Cactus is great..... Be there next year!

Ted

We are leaving early Friday (tomorrow) to get there in time for the 2 pm event at the second mission site.

Wish more Nomads were coming down... but those that do will have fun and eat well!

If I don't get back on line before... I will report back to you all next week when we return!

Viva Baja everyone!
