11-06 Baja 1000, and MORE! (Part 1 of 4: La Lobera, Cataviña)
Helping TheSquarecircle due race communications for Baja Pits at Race Mile 328 (EL CRUCERO) was the primary goal of thuis 6 day trip. However, Baja
Angel's 21 year old son (Josh) would be joining us so a tour of northern Baja sites was also in order!
We headed for our first night at EL ROSARIO'S Baja Cactus Motel on Tuesday, Nov. 14. crossing south at Tecate.
In Ensenada we noticed a giant shopping cart advertising the new Wal Mart was open...

We had a wonderful night at Baja Cactus and dinner at the 'Baja's Best Bed & Breakfast' at the far end of town (Lobster Ed's Style)...
Wednesday morning we drove back to Km. 47 1/2 for the side road to LA LOBERA to show Josh and check on the progress.
Jaime was there to collect the 20 peso/ 2 dollar parking fee and also the owner of La Lobera, Adrian Santana.

Adrian shows us the plates where baby abalone is grown. The giant pool outside will be an aquarium full of sea food for the future restaurant at LA
LOBERA.

The coastline here is very dramatic... only 3.0 miles from Hwy. 1 (follow the new power lines and ignore the <in Spanish> keep out sign)...

I liked this abalone shell map of Baja!
From La Lobera we returned to Km. 47.5 and drove the 6 miles back to EL ROSARIO to top of our gas tanks and have breakfast... We went back to Ed
Lusk's Baja's Best Bed & Breakfast for great food...
Next stop was the painted cave about 2 miles north of Cataviña!

I like it and it is a great little hike and climb up to break up the driving day... about 74 miles from El Rosario.

Josh with the cave hill behind him. The painted cave is at the top, under the boulder behind that cardon cactus. An easier trail to the top begins at
the right side of the hill and we then came down the side facing the highway (seen here).

EL CRUCERO is normally just the place where Highway One curves to the south at the base of a hill and the old main gulf side road from San Felipe
joined the Transpeninsular Highway, via Calamajue Canyon.
But, when an off road race comes this way EL CRUCERO becomes a little city. Here is the view from Highway One, looking east. By the time the racers
started to arrived (NOON Thursday), the number of vehicles here doubled!

Hi Bob... Each time I come by here I get a new date... the last time it was to open Sept. 2, 2006.
I just got a polite smile when I reminded Adrian of that date!
He seems ready... But, the place is remote and it would be expensive to open without a known customer base.
Maybe when the Diamante Del Mar golf resort is built, maybe sooner??? The name 'La Lobera' will probably apply to the restaurant as well?
Maybe for next July's BAJA-EL ROSARIO FESTIVAL we can convince him to open???

I noticed - and liked - those too when we were there in September.
I inquired with Jaime about where they were produced, and he told me about the local El Rosario resident that made them. I tried to make contact with
that person, but found it difficult in my limited time there to do so.

Noticed the structure and Pinturas Rupuestres signs on the highway side of the cave on

The abalone map maker, if in El Rosario, could be discovered with Baja Cactus' help...

When we pulled off the highway and drove past the lowered chain to the arroyo at the base of the cave hill, nobody was there. When we drove out that
'guide' was near the entrance... I am sure he tries to get anyone to hand him some money to guide them.
If you need a guide, then great... I already knew the way and he wasn't there when we arrived.
