11-06 Baja 1000, and MORE! (Part 3 of 4: L.A. Bay, Montevideo, Coco's Corner...)
Continued from Part 2 at: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=21084
We left beautiful Bahia de los Angeles for the long drive north to Shell Island (about 20 miles south of San Felipe) to share as much of Baja with
Josh as we could. At 21, he may not get a lot of vacation time off work!
We stopped at the viewpoint where the highway enters the canyon...
I took a panorama series from right (southeast) to left (northeast) of Bahia de los Angeles...

It's a great photo location... pull off is where the road begins to descend steeply after exiting the canyon, if you are heading east.
Panorama #3 blurred, sorry!

The turnoff to San Borja is 14 miles from L.A. Bay and well signed... In fact, it looks like a lot of new signs have been put up (with Escalera
Nautica money perhaps?) in the area. Including the turnoff to Montevideo, 2 miles in from the pavement. It is 7 miles to Montevideo from the San Borja
graded road and it goes through about the nicest cactus gardens in Baja!
This arched boojum is along the way...

The Squarecircle's 4Runner has about a quarter million miles on it, and still going strong! Oh, what a feeling: Toyota!

One nice thing about Montevideo is you can drive right to the site... no climbing or long walks. Great for anyone regardless of physical ability...
The road in is a narrow track and any wide rigs will get some Baja pin stripes, but 2WD is all you need.

Here's Roy at Montevideo...
I have a lot more photos taken of the various rock art from last time I was here, starting on this page: http://vivabaja.com/105/page6.html

To avoid eating dust, we allow some distance between trucks... We waited at the paved L.A. Bay road for Roy to catch up and it was a good time for
cerveza!
We caught up with Roy at Laguna Chapala when he aired down for the washboard... Our next main stop was Coco's Corner, which was a SCORE Checkpoint
(#4) in the Baja 1000 of 2 days earlier...

We found Coco to be looking very happy and healthy! The Baja 1000 must have been good to him this year.
Coco had stickers and Coco's Corner T shirts... We each got one! Cold Pacificos too!

Coco displays the entry in his previous log book with my 'got baja?' business card attached (Jan. '05) and today's entry with a mini 'got baja?'
sticker.

Josh first learned about Coco from his mom's trip story of '05, then saw him in Dust to Glory (the Baja 1000 movie)... Now, in person. What better way
to pay tribute than to add a pair of Guinness Beer boxers to the collection!

Yes, Coco looked happy and well... His man made oasis in the desert at the junction of the Puerto and Canyon Calamajue roads with Hwy. 5 between
Gonzaga and Laguna Chapala has paid off.
