I don't what or where Ecomundo is, but I do know a properly built straw bale house has a VERY small chance of burning down. Less then a stick framed place by a long stretch.

With such a great piece of property and structures......... He should have had a caretaker their to supervise a few things. That would seem as almost a "no brainer"..

OK, I will bite. What happened? Why did they burn down their own place?

Obviously if they had problems over christmas, with semanta santa just around the corner the problems would have been even worse, but doesn't burning property go against the sustainable theory they seem to operate under? Finally, where does Thailand come into it?

Property is for sale for 2.2 mil it as i understend a group of yurts straw huts , after owners left they were used as free camp sites and trashed , So he had them burned to prevent further damage , i guess destroying them is better than half destroying them

The main structure and bathrooms were not burnt. The palapas were in poor repair after Juan went through. And Christmas trash and semma santa had alot to do with the decision to burn.

Tom, the owners of this place just closed shop, flew to Thailand and started a new life there... Either they can't sit stil for very long or Mexico sure scared them off!

David,
I´m not going to comment on Roy or his operation but he and his previous partner had been in business either there or where they started nearby at Santispac for nearly 15 years. I met them in 1993 and they had been there for a bit at that time. Originally called Baja Tropicales at Santispac and then Ecomundo with the newer place.

Hi Kurt,

I am only posting my thoughts... Ecomundo was popular, so why not sell it to someone who will keep it going? I read here that they just relocated to Thailand to start a new tourist business... So, my thoughts above are honestly based on hear-say (here on Nomad) info.

Anyway, I bow to your details if they are the true ones! So, it was a health issue that made him go to Thailand? Man, that just doesn't make sense because I always feel healthier in Baja! I wish them the best!!

What was burned was just the palm thatched huts that had been formerly used as camping tents. This was done under the supervision of trained former fire personnel, at the request and concurrance of Roy. The auction of personal property, (Kitchen equipment, kayaks, solar panels, utensils, furniture, Servel propane refrigerators, building material, LOTS OF STUFF) is still on and scheduled for Saturday, March 24 at 1:00 PM.

THE REASON FOR THE AUCTION, is to provide some money so Roy can hire a guard.

THE REASON FOR THE BURNING was to discourage unauthorized use of the premises and continued vandalism. Especially over Semana Santa, which has been a big problem.
