Aqua Verde trip today

Made the trip to Aqua Verde today. Road in pretty good shape considering. Stopped at the new home on the point looking North, looking for Martin who is having another home being built above the finished one. Mexicans informed me that many new homes will be built on the hill.????!!!! Martin wasn't around (he used to own a large boat dealership in Davis, Ca. Sold & he retired. Some home he's building. Each room on a different level. What a view. Stopped at the restaurant in the fishing village. Managed to get only Quesadillas & Cokes. Met the father of the lady in charge. Says he is 80 years young. Born there, same as father, and grandfather came from Sonora via boat many many years ago. On way back we stopped at bottom of mountain before assending the road, looking to see if we could find the Green Tortoise camp. The bus was at the top of the hill. But couldn't locate the camp. Anyone been there that can give me directions? Been going down there for about 14 years, and still find the trip a new adventure everytime. The cement roadway seems to have more cement than last trip some years ago.
Wife was still petrified with going down. But refuses to do the driving herself. First time going there that I wasn't in a 4X4 pickup. Town & Country did just great with five passengers in it. Recommended drive.

Hi Phil,

The Green Tortoise tour goes to Rancho San Cosme, which is the first road to the beach after reaching the bottom of the grade.

The ranch house and lagre cabaņa/ palapa room is where they feed the tourists. The hot springs (between high and low tide like at Puertecitos) are a short distance north along the cliff at water's edge. You cannot drive there at high tide, which was the case when I was there a few years ago!

David. There was a small tour group out of Loreto camped at the waters edge, at the bottom of the grade. Camp guide told me about the hot water spring when tide is out. There were some buildings in the same area. Guess that must have been Green Tort. camp. Bus was at top of hill. One of the newer ones. Now wish I had taken a picture of the "ancient ones" I've seen back in the 70's or whenever plying I-5 from Seattle to Baja??????
Guessing they went there also in those days????? Anyone know for sure that has ridden them??????
Everyone should make this trip at least once in their Baja travels. The views are spectacular of the sea & the islands. And a visit to the village at the far end of the road is worthwhile with a stop at the restaurant also.
David. You been down there since the two houses have been built against the side of the mountain south about maybe 4 miles after hitting the bottom of the grade? And looks like a new industry is coming to this quiet hide a way in the way of home construction. Now an option. Housekeeping. Construction or fishing.

No Phil, I was there in Dec. 2001... Camped 2 nights, and loved it!

Do you know about the original village not the one facing the cove at the end of the road?

We camped near the original village of Agua Verde, by a palm grove... Had lobsters delivered to us... met with some of the villagers who came be to visit... a Frenchman came over who was staying in the village... It is about a mile or less before the end of the road at the new village 'Puetro Agua Verde'

I have pictures of one of the original GT buses during a tour of the Yucatan several years back. If I remember correctly, it was a 1955 model. It ran fine - better than the newer one we rode in Yosemite which had a worn out split differential. I'd have to scan the photo and resize it to post here.

David. Your talking about the Frenchman George Mardant from Pt Reeves, Cal. up north on the coast of Calif.
He prefered to be called Jorge. And his little dog MiMi, who barks in "french"??? His trailer he was living in was purchased from my brother Gordon many years ago, and hauled down there by a Mexican trucker with a flatbed truck. Was a 4X4 trip to get to his spot on the beach. Most times we'd catch him bare assed necked!!!! He'd get a pair of pants on when wife Wendy was with us. Always a gracious host. Fresh fruit plate every time we went to visit. He was blind in one eye and could hardly see out of the other. Was a miracle he made that trip without incident each year in his Jeep Cherokee.
I didn't know that there was another "village" before the other one we were at. Is it still in existance? Didn't see anything that would indicate such a place driving through. Did see some buildings from atop one of the knolls that showed maybe eight or ten structures off the beach about half way south of the G.T. camp. Was tempted to drive in and snoop around, but didn't.
