MEXICO CITY - A Colorado couple was killed when a van smashed into their rented Volkswagen sedan on a highway outside the tourist city of Cabo San Lucas, authorities said Monday.

Kenton Earl Lammers, 62, and 59-year-old Patricia Ann Lammers, both of Monument, Colo., were killed in the accident, said Lorena Blanco, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Consulate in the border city of Tijuana.

The Lammers left Cabo San Lucas early Saturday and were traveling on an eight-lane highway, heading to the nearby town of San Jose del Cabo, said Jose Antonio Valazquez, a spokesman for authorities in western Baja California Sur state, where Cabo San Lucas is located.

The couple was trying to cross three lanes of traffic and make a left turn onto the other side of the highway when a Pontiac Transport struck them from behind, causing their car to flip on its side and skid for several hundred yards (meters).

Both Lammers were dead by the time authorities arrived, Valazquez said.

Local authorities questioned and were considering filing charges against Francisco Alan Perez, the 17-year-old driver of the van, because his vehicle did not have license plates.

Four children who were riding with Perez were injured in the accident, none critically, Valazquez said. Perez wasn't hurt.

Terrible news. If I'm not mistaken I think "Chopy" predicted that it wouldn't be long before a tragic accident would occur on that highway. So sad!

people really fly on this new road now and it is a scary thing trying to make any turns on it since everyone will ride your butt and not slow down. Going from one side of the highway to the other is just about impossible. That is sad news indeed
