Paddle Surfing...

...just got back from HMB, below Mavericks, for some foggy, beach time.

There were a couple of 'Paddle Surfers' out on the mini curls - first time I'd seen em'! Those long, 11 ft. boards are a blast from the past...could probably even support my large body!

Just wondering what 'real' Baja surfers thought of these Standing, Paddle Boarders...?

Looks like once you get your grip of standing on that wide board, you're half way home to some fun in the small stuff...don't know how they'd handle in the bigger surf...

Any comments?

Caught a look of paddle surfing in Los Barriles this winter...very cool. It's supposed to be a real work-out and is catching on quickly in the water world. Manufatrurers are improving he models and some are adpatable for windsurfing. Great no-wind sport! We're thinking of getting a copule!:tumble:

Great for small surf...but personally I don't like adding on unnecessary equipment and I like to sit between waves!

A Hawaiian invention. Laird Hamilton is a big proponent of it in California. There was article last year in the L.A. Times about some guys in the lineup at Malibu saying hey, who's the kook paddling over here on a stand up board, until they realized it was Hamilton. I don't think anyone's making fun of him for doing it, at least to his face.

Ancient history: I learned to surf on a 10'6" Yater, never could make the transition to the pocket rockets.

Seems like a kayak paddle would work better.

I’m not sure how popular they are at the more crowded spots with everyone else who’s trying to catch a little wave or two in this highly competitive surfing era. The boards are huge and the guys can stand way outside of everyone else and pick off the waves they want. They look like a slab of sidewalk coming at you on a wave. A friend on Maui who lives in front of one of the more congested spots says they have made surfing there just about intolerable.

I’ve been told that at San Onofre they’re relegated to the "other water equipment" zone with the kayaks and surfskis etc. They aren't allowed in the surfing section of the beach.

I'm starting to see lots of them on flat-water when I'm out paddleboarding (the other kind of paddling, with your arms). Even folks who don't appear like they've ever surfed or spent any time near the water before are taking them out in the harbor (Dana Pt), and they say it's good exercise for the midsection.

There may be some good deals on used ones on craigslist in a couple of months . ;D

The position looks like it would give you a back ache and seems awkward with both feet parallel to the rails, but I can't knock it til I try it cause it might be fun.

I surfed a lot in the 60's and early 70's and never heard of this. Here's more info on "stand up paddle surfing"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stand_up_paddle_surfing

and more photos here...

Ray, again thanks for bringing up this subject!

Bob and Susan...

...guess I've got to get my 'Ass' off my surf board and head south!

I've been viewing all your photos of the 'Big Dig' down there on the beach at Playa los Naranjos...good stuff!

Which side of the lagoon will the new Naranjos Yacht Club be erected? There should be a long bar in the plans, with a view of all the Mega Yachts to be moored in the harbor!

I'm nominating you, Bob, as the NYC's charter Commodore! We probably should keep Pompano on hand as 'Vice Commodore', a fitting position I believe! Perhaps Susan will be willing to fill the valued position of Port Captain to keep track of all visiting Skippers! I'll offer to be part-time Bar Keep, I need to be indoors and away from trouble...

It should be an interesting upcoming 'season' on the beach...when do you think AN is going to use his political clout to get the power lines run down the hill from Microndos Tiburon? We'll really need a big ice machine behind the bar at the new NYC!!!

Roger, we'll share the 'juice' with you...

...as long as you turn off your mini-splits when we've got the ice machine crankin' out 'cubes' over at the Naranjos Yacht Club's bar...you'll know because you're lights will go dim from all the Amps we're using keeping the Pacifico's cold!
