Two quakes hit south of border

The Associated Press

Two earthquakes rattled a remote, mountainous region south of the border Tuesday, causing minor shaking some 30 miles north of Mexicali but no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake hit just after 1 p.m., 36 miles south-southeast of Ocotillo and 41 miles south-southwest of El Centro, according to a preliminary report from the U.S. Geological Survey.

About 40 minutes later, a 4.0-magnitude temblor struck the same area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Federal and local police in Mexicali, just south of the border, said they had no reports of damage.

"It wasn't strong. ... We didn't feel it very strongly," said federal police Agent Fernando Arollo.

The temblor caused plates and glasses to shake at the Cafe Civico in central Mexicali, said Lucia Velarde Garcia, a waitress there.

"It was very light. Nothing fell," she said.

California Institute of Technology scientists determined the 4.8 temblor was a new quake and the 4.0 quake was likely an aftershock, said Caltech spokesman Robert Tindol.
