Los Cabos Says No to "Spring Breakers"

http://travel.discovery.com/news/afp/20040301/charles.html

March 4, 2004 ? Hotel owners in the Mexican resort town of Los Cabos have taken action to try to stop an onslaught of US "spring breakers", mostly university students on short, often raucous holiday trips.

The Hotel Association of Los Cabos said its members have rejected any special packages or discounts that might encourage the southward migration of this wildlife "since they only come to do things they cannot do in their own country," the group's president Alberto Coppel said.

"Our goal is to completely wipe out tourism by spring breakers," Coppel said, rolling up his welcome mat even though it may hurt the bottom line.

Many more conservative Mexicans have been appalled by US TV shows and sexy video peddlers filming drunken, breast-baring or worse exploits of spring breakers on Mexican beaches and in Mexican bars from Los Cabos to Cancun, Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta.

I was in Cabo last year and left to head back to Los Cerritos (Todos Santos area) after I found the spring breakers were converging on Cabo.

It's nice to see all the bikinis on the beach, but what's with all the breaking of beer bottles into the streets of Cabo about? Not smart.

When Mommy and Daddy are paying for all the excessive alcohol and rooms, throwing bottles into the streets of a foreign country is not out of the question for some of these marooons. Most behave, but it's the ones that don't that cause the grief.

A night or two in the Cabo jail would teach some valuable lessons. Pleased to see that someone in Cabo is taking a no-tolerance stance on rowdy springbreakers.
