Baja Calif has highest Federal crime rate; BCS 3rd

December 17, 2002

Mexico City, Dec 17, 2002 (EFE via COMTEX) -- Nearly one-third of the federal crimes committed in Mexico over the first 11 months of the year were linked to the drug trade, authorities reported Tuesday.

In its monthly crime report, the Attorney General's Office (PGR) said 67,890 federal crimes were committed across the country through November.

The figure, however, does not include homicides or kidnappings, which are under the jurisdiction of state authorities.

Federal crimes in Mexico include drug and weapons offenses, organized criminal activity and financial crimes, such as fraud, embezzlement and extortion.

According to the report, Baja California has the highest crime rate, with 322 offenses per 100,000 residents, followed by Sonora with 233 and Baja California Sur with 173.

Greater Mexico City ranked fourth with 109.4 crimes for each 100,000 inhabitants.

The report found that the state of Mexico, which surrounds the capital, is the safest, with just 28 crimes per 100,000 residents, followed by Puebla with 28 and Veracruz with 29.
