When driving, wave at everybody, and they will wave back.

Take a walk and when you happen upon an old person in town, sit down and talk with them(Don't forget to use Usted). They know far more than you, they will appreciate the conversation, and you will learn more about the area than any guidebook will ever tell you.

Get insurance, and don't make eye contact with shady-looking people. When crossing the border(northbound), simply hold up your index finger and wave it just a bit to let the vendors know you are not the least bit interested.(no, not THAT finger!)

Shake out things off the clothesline before wearing and always check inside your shoes.

Sorry Bajacat, I have to give another side to your theory. A very good friend of mine picked up a blonde Scandinavian :dudette:'hot chick' in Catavina one summer when we all were supposed to meet for the solar eclipse in Bahia. She said that she was wanting a ride ONLY to the turn off, which turned out to be to our camp site, which then turned out to be on every boat ride, which ultimately turned out to be a trip up North, which in the long run turned out to be opening the passenger door at the border cause she didn't have the proper paper work to continue with her adventure. She had other things in mind for her trip. So, I guess my point is to beware of the beatutiful hitchiker. Ours was a pain in the burro....but she did do the dishes....

Nothing wrong taken, Bajacat. My point was to be wary of hitchhikers, be it female or not. Just as in your situation, they sent out the girls to do the mans work. You never know who is hiding behind the cardon....I've helped out many people and made many good friends because I took the chance to pull over, but now a days one has to be warry of that decision.
