Mexican Surf Fiesta

This past weekend Baja Bound sponsored the 27th annual Mexican Surf Fiesta that was held at San Miguel, Ensenada. The contest is a 2 Star World Qualifying Series event, which allows pro surfers to earn qualifying points for the ASP World Tour. Thankfully, the Pacific Northwest turned on just in time to bring some great overhead surf to the point at San Miguel. Brad Ettinger from Huntington Beach came out on top, earning $5,000 for the win.

For the first time ever, the NSSA (National Scholastic Surfing Association) invited 16 of the best amateur surfers in the U.S. to compete in the “Sweet Sixteen” portion of the contest, with the winner earning a spot in the main event. Nathan Rex from Hawaii took first place honors and also took home $2,500. It was really amazing to see the level at which these kids are surfing. You can check out video from the “Sweet Sixteen” at:

I will get some photos up after I sort through them all and get them re-sized!

Here are some photos that I took as well.....it was a memorable event!

The view from the top of the hill on Saturday morning...

This set came through in between heats and everyone watched as the perfect, empty waves rolled down the point.

A nice turn on a great wave with spectators checking out the action.

Hey Geoff, is the restaurant still going at San Miguel in the camping area? Did you eat there? It used to be pretty good for reasonable seafood but that was many moons ago. They always seemed to have black sea bass and white sea bass on the menu.

Hey Hook,

I did eat dinner at the restaurant at the top of the hill...not sure if that is the one you are referring to. It was good...and reasonably priced. I had chicken though.....not sea bass!
