LOS ANGELES ? A 25-year-old man who was sailing from San Pedro to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, has been missing for nearly three weeks, the U.S. Coast Guard said Friday.

Jebediah Cross was believed to have left for Mexico alone on a 27-foot white sailboat, possibly on March 8, said Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer Dave Hardesty.

Cross, whose family had recently moved to California from Idaho, had taken three classes last month at the Santa Barbara Sailing Center. He had earned certification with the American Sailing Association but Skip Abed, owner of the center, said Cross did not have the training needed for the one- to two-week trip to the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula.

"With the classes he had, it would be rather premature to be casting off dock lines and setting sail on that voyage he claimed to undertake," Abed said.

The boat Cross was in had wood and bronze trim and was named Quest Star 2. It was unclear who owned it.

The Coast Guard was transmitting urgent broadcasts over marine channels seeking information about Cross on Friday, and may begin searching with airplanes and boats if he is not located, a spokesman said.
