Finale of five-race 2004 SCORE Desert Series

La Paz inks contract with SCORE International to host
Finish line of November?s 37th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 Set for Nov. 17-21, Grandaddy of all desert races-a peninsula run to La Paz for 16th time in event?s storied history

LOS ANGELES?Returning to the city of peace where the legend of one of the world?s most famous motorsports events began over three decades ago, SCORE International has officially signed the contract guaranteeing that La Paz, Mexico, will host the finish line for November?s 37th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 desert race.
Confirming today that the granddaddy of all desert races will be a peninsula run to La Paz, Baja California Sur, for the 16th time, SCORE International, the world?s foremost desert racing organization, has signed an extensive marketing and promotional agreement with the government of Baja California Sur along with the Department of Tourism for Baja California Sur.
With festivities set for Nov. 17-21, the start for the world?s oldest and most prestigious desert race for the 30th time will be Ensenada, Mexico, located on Todos Santos Bay on the Pacific Ocean side of the Baja California peninsula, 65 miles south of the U.S. Border near San Diego.
This year?s race will also feature the $40,000 Terrible?s Bonus Purse provided by Herbst Gaming of Las Vegas.
With more than 220 anticipated entries, competition will be held in 24 Pro and 5 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs. La Paz is located on the Sea of Cortez, near the Southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. When finalized, the complete route for this year?s race will again cover more than 1,000 miles of the mysterious and foreboding Baja California peninsula.
"SCORE International and La Paz have had a tremendous relationship since the inaugural Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 in 1967 and it adds even more drama and lure to this incredible adventure to have it finish in the city of peace this year," said Sal Fish, the SCORE CEO and President who has been part of the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 since 1974. "With this year?s contract, the government of Baja California Sur once again opens its arms of international friendship to SCORE and our racers, welcoming us to their state and assuring us of another memorable experience."
SCORE also announced that for the first time in the event?s history, the ceremonial finish for this year?s race will be alongside of the Sea of Cortez on the malecon boardwalk in downtown La Paz. The SCORE finish-line fiesta will include live music, entertainers and race vendors along with a special display area honoring all of the survivors of the grueling odyssey. Traditionally, the race has finished on the outskirts of the city.
Coordinating the efforts and the finalization of this landmark contract with SCORE have been Leonel Cota, the Governor of Baja California Sur, Maribel Collins, the Secretary of Tourism for BCS and Victor Lizarraga, BCS?s Lieutenant Governor. The Governor and his staff will also spearhead the promotional effort to finalize the details of the SCORE finish-line fiesta.
The race will finish in La Paz for the first time since 2002. The 15 previous years the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 finished in La Paz were: 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1979, 1982, 1986, 1989, 1992, 1995, 1998 and 2002.
