Fishing from Shore

A buddy and I have got three weeks to ride Baja by dualsport motorcyle. Our trip begins this Friday (4/9/04). We're planning on doing as much fishing as possible along the way, most of it from shore. We need some basic fishing info. Any help will be greatly appreciated as we're two Colorado guys who are used to fly fishing for brook trout! - a far stretch from anything in Baja!

1. If you could bring only a small amount of fishing gear (we're traveling by motorycle!) what would it be?
2. Are there seasons for clams/oysters...
3. Would you use different equipment/tackle for gulf side fishing versus Pacific side?
4. What kind of licenses are needed for fishing?

Thanks!

Sorry

Shellfish gathering is illegal for non- Mexicans. No license needed for shore fishing....what bait? Sorry, not a clue. I'm sure the 'Pro' fishing guys will help you out with that one. :)

Use the same gear for both sides. I'm more into the live bait which most any kind will work, squid, fish, bugs, etc. I have used halibit jigs, crocodiles and plastic worms with some luck at times. No license needed for surf fishing. I like fishing the area south of LA Bay where the road is near the water and on the pacific side at Jesus Maria (Laguna Manuela). The coves around the light house can be great at times. Get the book "Baja Catch" full of great info.

Fishing is pretty good at Estero Coyote too (high tide or incoming tide).

fishing from shore

We take squid from home, salt it down and use it all week. Works great on fish that will be close to shore.
Also, if you catch one fish then you have bait, just use the pieces that you have left over after fileting the catch, otherwise sent to the gulls.
Final tip, use a bobber because the fish you catch will be in the rocks and you will lose your hook every time if you drag it though the rocks.
(a couple wine bottle corks work great if you don't have a bobber.)
Another possible bait is clams or shellfish, although another post indicated that non-Mexicans are not supposed to be harvesting same.
Good luck, the fishing was great at LABay last week!
