This would be so funny were it not so tragic--what about his own people
March 4, 2008
Health News
Carlos Slim's Medical Maquiladoras
Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim is moving ahead with his plans to open
hospitals in Mexico that cater to US baby boomers. Slim's business
concept might be compared to a maquiladora export factory. A raw product,
in this case an ailing US citizen, is imported into Mexico, "put together"
and then re-exported back to the home country. Ironically, Slim's
fortune, now estimated to be larger than Bill Gates', derives in part from
the tycoon's Marlboro cigarette business in Mexico.
In partnership with Grupo Star Medica, Slim's Ideal company intends to
open new medical centers in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, and in Los Cabos on
the Baja Peninsula. A national hospital chain, Grupo Star Medica is a
fast-growing business with expansion plans in Ciudad Juarez and additional
Mexican cities. In 2007, Ideal purchased 49 percent of Grupo Star Medica's
stock. Specializing in construction and development, Ideal has agreed to
help Grupo Star Medica with infrastructure, acquisition and financing.
With its planned medical centers in Puerto Penasco and Los Cabos, Grupo
Star Medica plans to tap into a new market segment of US baby boomers who
are buying second homes in Mexico. Reportedly, sales of vacation homes in
Los Cabos and Puerto Penasco increased 30 percent and 45 percent,
respectively, during the last three years.
Claudia Velazquez, an analyst for the Softec real estate market analysis
firm, said the relative lack of medical services in beach resorts
attractive to US vacationers and expatriates is opening up business
opportunities for companies like Grupo Star Medica.
"(Baby boomers) are also choosing Mexico because its health system is much
cheaper than in the United States," Velazquez said.
Besides Slim, other Mexico-based entrepreneurs are seriously looking at
the growing population of US baby boomers who need health care services.
Their plan is to get US private insurance companies to pay for medical
treatment in Mexico.
"For a US insurance policy to pay for medical treatment, the treatment has
to comply with certain quality control standards, and we are going to
participate with products to serve this niche," said Jaime Jimenez,
general director for Mexico Trane, another company on the same path as
Slim. Of course, it remains to be seen if the expansion of
medical services in Mexico to US residents will help lower private
insurance premiums in this country.

When first touted as the world's richest man, Carlos slim was asked by a reporter what the difference was between him and Bill Gates. Slim's reply, "I
don't give my money away."
I think the world is run by C- students.

It was just announced by Forbes today that Slim (and family) has slipped to the number two spot, despite his fortune doubling to sixty billion in
just two years.
The winner is Warren Buffet (no relation to Jimmy Buffet :lol at sixty-two
billion.
And Bill Gates has slipped to the #3 position.

I find it sad that Sr Slim is proud of his "contribution" to changing the lifes of his own people. Some "social contract"!

Actually, Warren Buffett and Jimmy Buffett are cousins of some sort or another. In fact, Jimmy even played a gig for a shareholder meeting for
Warren....
(I know far more about Jimmy B than I should.....)

In all seriousness folks.......if Mexico can provide medical services to Americans with their American insurance, it will create a massive retirement
move for the Baby Boomers.
This could be one of the best opportunities ever for good jobs for Mexicans in Mexico.

Bernie, you must have had a good reason to post this news item. You asked "What about his own people?" What about them? You must think with all his
money he could/should help them. What do you suggest? How should he give money to Mexico/Mexicans (beyond the huge taxes he pays)? How much charity,
of what kind, where and how?

He could lower his friggin telephone rates and allow some competition in the communication industry. He must have a lock on the politicians in
Mexico. He operates in areas that are necessities for all without competition - no wonder he is a billionaire.

Welcome from one Bernie to another.
Your points are well taken and they are the reason that I will not approach Osprey's questions.
If the man had any desire to help others he would never have explained the differences between Bill Gates and himself in the manner that he did.

He has given some away.
From his bio in Forbes
Quote: |
A widower and father of six, Slim is a baseball fan and art collector. He keeps his art collection in Mexico City's Museo Soumaya, which he named
after his late wife. In recent years, he has donated close to $7 billion worth of cash and stock to fund education and health projects, and to the
revitalization of Mexico City's downtown historical district. |
Slim Bio
Maybe the millionaires in Hollywood can get together and donate some of their wealth to help the great state of California out of its budget mess, or
just focus on the great city of Los Angeles.....
Truth generally lies in the coordination of antagonistic opinions

I don't think there's a lot of profit in hospital care unless you cut a lot of corners. It's not a hotel room where you count and evaluate the
amenities, with a fun factor - this is adequate care for the sick and maimed. Baby boomers - old people - will need all kinds of surgical procedures
or at least procedures for testing and evaluating - CT scans, MRIs, arthroscopic surgery, adequate care after knee replacement surgery - proper rehab
for torn shoulder ligaments; liver transplants for all those alcoholics, all kinds of cancers. Good care uses good equipment. And good care is
provided by knowledgeable, trained, caring people - hopefully who speak the same language as the patient. If a baby boomer has insurance for
treatment in a hospital, skilled nursing facility or other facility in the US, why wouldn't they just go there? I like the idea of more medical
facilities - but the profit-making motive doesn't fit with this kind of "business."

There are huge profits being made in the current system that have nothing to do with quality of care. This is part of why universal care is so highly
contested by insurance companies, hospitals and doctors.

Forgive this comment by a 60 year old conservative republican
If Carlos wants to act like most world wide business folks and screw down the employees, then I suggest someone introduce the concept of "Form a
Union"

Union? They have unions. The government controls the unions and Carlos controls all of it.
