Tecate Camping

Does anyone have a suggestion on a place to stay on the US side of Tecate? We would like to cross the border as soon as it opens in the morning (6:00 am ?) and are able to camp or motel it.

Portrero Valley Campground Near Tecate

I saved this a couple of years ago. It is a very nice campground.

Save this note for future reference-

Portrero Valley Campground is administered by San Diego County. It is located just north of the rural community of
Portrero which itself is located two miles East of the junction of CA 188 and CA 94 (The Tecate junction).

Traveling east on CA 94 drive past the spur road to the border (Tecate) which is CA 188. Continue on CA 94 to the
wide-spot-in-the-road of Portrero (there's a sign) and then to PORTRERO VALLEY ROAD. The road is well signed you
can't miss it.

Make a left onto Portrero Valley Road and drive one mile (past the library and school). The very first road to the right,
take it. There will be a "camping" sign at this intersection. After the right, continue on this road until it ends at the park.
Hot showers, barbecue grills, fire rings, and clean flush toilets. There is one section for tent and car camping and another
for RV's with hookups except sewer. There is an on-site dump station. The well water is excellent. The cost for overnight
for an RV was eight dollars which is less than the posted price of twelve. This is a very pretty (under the oaks)
campground -- utterly safe for kids, jittery wives and rigs with exposed gear heading to and from Baja.

I figure that the park is about three and a half miles from the 188 / 94 junction, which makes it five and a half miles away

but don't tell anyone, it is a secret

we stay there on our way back

our visit about three weeks ago was a disappointment

there was no hot water in the showers

the ranger station had closed up, so there was on one to talk to about it

you can make reservations by phone--just find San Diego County Parks on the web
