South Dakota car registration
To All: Any information on car registration in South Dakota would be appreciated. I know there was a post quite a few months ago. Has anyone been
through the process lately?

Then Treasurer's office. It gives the info you need. Also, the phone number to call the Treasurer's office for costs etc.

South Dakota Registration
Brian- I was able to do it without a problem. I keep my car in Coyote Bay, wanted to register it in USA, called them and they did it. No insurance
required like CA. Cheaper too.

One twist to this process. I am in the midst of this and got a call from the Clay Co. Treasurer's office today.
Due to the fact that I purchased one of my vehicles this year, I am having to fill out the form entitle Applicant's Tax Payment Verification and send
that along to attest that I paid the onerous "use" tax in California at the time of purchase. This will exempt me from this in SD. But it must be
filed IF the vehicle was purchased this year.
They also inquired about a title change I performed on my boat this year. But since I was removing one owner and adding another (mi esposa), it did
not require this form.

If you can avoid paying sales tax in any state and especially California, you will only pay 3% in south Dakota. I feel it is worth supporting SD...and
I have been ripped by California enough.   My papers are in the mail now.

I'm doing it for my CA cars, boat and trailer..........but I'm moving out of state.
CA frowns heavily on having vehicles registered in one state while possessing a CA DL.

I see on the Clay County site that South Dakota allows registration of 4 wheel ATVs like Polaris and Mules so they can be driven on public roads. I
wonder if it would be possible to register an ATV and then get a temporary Mexican import permit so that they could be driven on public roads in
Mexico. Has anyone here done this?

Just received my new plates and registration. "Pink slips" (who knows what color they are in SD?) should arrive in about a week. Got the boat
stickers, too.
Very nice people to deal with.

i think mexican traffic cops consider south dakota law to be the law they prefer to enforce. 
maybe in somalia you don't need a license. register your atv in somalia and i'm sure all countries will recognize it as legal.
why would anyone think that south dakota laws have any bearing on what mexico allows?
last time i checked, mexico had no representation in south dakota government.

If SD issues plates for the vehicle, why would Mexico treat it any different than any other plated vehicle from the USA?

Mtgoat - reciprocity exists, in fact it's the law between the countries as far as vehicles go. Many types of vehicles, for example diesel pickups,
aren't sold in Mexico, but american tourists can get temporary import permits for them.
Vehicles from South Dakota are issued temporary permits in Mexico, so why not ATV's.
If you don't know the answer then sit back and relax, and let someone who knows respond.

I think the ATV question depends alot on whether Mexico enforces a no-ATV rule on pavement because:
1-it is illegal in Mexico or
2-ATVs rarely carry licenses
If it's #2, then maybe the licensing will work. But if it's #1, then I think it naive to assume that a license will make it "legal".
Eugenio, you seem to be asking for an absolute answer on this..........and there are rarely absolutes in Mexican law enforcement.

Thanks Hook. I guess the only absolute I was looking for was whether anyone had done it. Like I wrote before, there are instances where tourists are
allowed to use vehicles that mexican citizens are not. I know that Kawasaki Mules can be made street legal in Texas and their requirements to make
them street legal appear to be about the same as South Dakota's, except that South Dakota apparently works more on the "honor" system. That is they
take your word that necessary changes (lights etc.) have been made.
But yeah Hook, enforcement is whole other deal. I guess I was thinking that if the mexican Feds are willingly to issue a hologram for it, that
upgrades have been made, and it has US plates, that the local police would have to abide.
Bottom line is a Mule would be handy in some parts of Mexico.
