Where in Baja to visit this winter
Hi all. I live on the east coat, and my hubby, 4 year old and I are going to be in Los Angeles this December for a wedding. Since we go to
Mexico every winter, we figure we must combine the 2 for financial/time reasons. Which leads us to Baja, just not sure where to go. Our ideal
vacation and things that are important to us:
-WARM and Tropical
-nice beaches for swimming and good for kids
-prefer a house, or accommodations with kitchen ad patio for son to play. There might be another family coming with us
-would really like accommodations on the beach...such as a house
-a mexican town, place where we can grab a bite.
-we will have a car that we will rent in Cabo
- a place that is not to windy.
All suggestions welcome!!

Sounds like you plan to fly into Cabo San Jose' ?
How long are you going for and how far do you want to travel ?
Looking for just one place or a few on your travels ?
The options are endless but for warmer weather you are safer on the Cortez side in the winter.
Los Barriles can be nice but is getting large.
La Ventana is smaller and cheaper.
Both of the above can be windy in the afternoons with calm evenings and mornings.
Todos Santos is nice on the Pacific and on the "loop" from Cabo.
Loreto is upscale and pricey as compared to some, but very nice.
Mulege is more "Mexican" and very nice - you could stay at Bob's Lighthouse Resort !

Ditto to what Dive wrote. Anywhere on the Cortez side would be a better choice, but you're almost certain to get some wind were ever you choose. I
drive to La Paz twice a year for a Rotarians clinic. It's a great place, but very large and busy. No houses on the beach that I know of, but you
might research it on the web or go to the rentals section on this web site. Buena suerte, Paul Boe

Original poster here: Wow, thanks for all the great suggestions. Yes we are going to fly into Cabo San Lucas, and get out as quickly as possible,
with a rental vehicle. We plan on being in Mexico for about 2 weeks, and prefer one place....but we are also open to 2 or 3 different locations. I
am really just looking for laid back beach town with a good friendly vibe. Sounds like I have some options, just worried about cold water, and
weather that is not going to be as HOT as I want.
Hmmmmmm.......

I'd check out either La Ventana; with day trips to La Paz and even Todos Santos or Los Barriles.
Or Mulege'; with day trip s to Loreto, Santa Rosalia or San Ignacio.
Conception beaches are often the warmest waters in the winter.

My vote, for what it's worth, is Mulege. For all the reasons previously mentioned
and more.

Bob and Susans 'Lighthouse' has everything you might want.
Great beaches, sailing for the aficionados, snorkeling, warm water in a protected area, great big nice swimming pool, fantastic meals for those that
do not want to go to town and its about 15 miles to Mulege, a city of endless possibilities for food, exploration and enjoyment.
You will really enjoy it there!
PS, even has high speed internet connection and almost unlimited TV!

The Barrels
Sounds like Los Barriles is the perfect spot to meet your requirements. (previously mentioned 'lighthouse' is isolated)

The only problem with Mulege is that it is a long drive North from your airport.
But, I would certainly avoid Cabo San Lucas (unless you really, really like Coney Island and Atlantic City) cuz it ain't Mexico....

If you decide to try La Ventana their are many houses and casitas for rent.
We like the Casa Verde which has new, waterfront rooms and an outdoor full kitchen and grill area.
You never have to drive if you don't want to as there are shops and restaurants within walking distance.

And I wouldn't call Bob's place isolated; I would call it quiet.
You have to drive if you want to get to town but Bob has almost everything you could want.
Brand new 2 bedroom casitas with an awsome pool and lots of toys.

You might check out my friend's place in Elias Calles south of Todos Santos. The place is incredible and there is plenty to do nearby.

Hi,
We just returned from Mulege- had 5 kids with us and they loved it. Beaches were fantastic- warm and clear. The town was very laid back-felt safe and
vary much welcome. It was hotter than heck and we kept saying it must be amazing in the winter! We stayed in a house on the river...not water you
want to swim in- we drove to the beaches (10-30 minutes). We would stay there again- nice to be close to town and close to the beaches. The drive was
fine. Went to Loreto and Punta Chivato. Both were nice but the clear, calm warm water in the bay near Mulege was incredible for the kids! (and
adults!)

Zac, what happened to La Cocina Pacifica? Is Rancho Cielomar the new name or close by? It looks a bit different than Jim's place from when I was there
in Dec. 2001.

Cocina Pacifica is about a mile south Rancho Cielomar. The CP property was sold but is help up in litigation. Our good friends own RC and we love
it. We stayed there last summer. I put in some sweat equity helping plant 15 coco palms around the place.
