NEW BOOK: The CAMINO REAL and MISSIONS of BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA
Jennifer at Sunbelt emailed me today a reply after I sent out a request for info on this new book I heard about :

Yes, it is an amazing and unique creation (a 12 foot long book-map bound like a book) and Sunbelt will be the exclusive distributor and the books are
getting here today—we weren’t sure when they’d get here, so didn’t want to start the rush yet! See flyer attached. Will be ready for sale at our
holiday party this Thursday Dec 4 at Sunbelt, also at Discover Baja’s party Friday—word is Harry will be there at DB in person to sign them, but I
can’t swear to it!
Please spread the word!!! Hope to see you this week one place or the other—or both!

David, I went to the Sunbelt site to order the book, but it is not listed, and when I do a search for the title is does not find it.
Any help?

BOOK REVIEW
Really a bummer that such a big book (size, not pages) is so full of factual errors...
The main attraction was the huge 8 foot, fold out satellite map showing the Camino Real and mission sites (with photos and notes for each site).
Unfortunately, the Camino Real location (done by the publisher?) looks more like a case of connect the dots with wavy lines rather than putting the
mission road where it really is!
Before the map, are 7 pages (folded, accordion style) with details on Baja history and geography.... everything is in English and Spanish.
Would make a good school project display, perhaps? Except for the history errors... and high price ($35-40).
Harry Crosby authored one page and it was fine, naturally. But... one of Harry's photos of the Camino Real was misidentified (by the publisher/
editor?) as being near 'El Rosario', instead of the correct 'El Rosarito' (hundreds of miles south of El Rosario, near Santa Marta/ San Ignacio).
Errors on the map (with mission lists and photos) include:
Listing two 'missions' that never were, and then placing them at other mission sites! As well as other errors:
A) 'Santa Maria Magdalena' (never was a mission) placed where San Jose de Comondu mission was first located (Comondu Viejo, southwest of Bahia
Concepcion).
Also) The photo labeled 'Santa Maria Magdalena' is the Dominican visita of SAN JOSE DE MAGDALENA (northwest of Mulege)
B) 'Dolores del Norte' (was an early proposed mission name for what became Santa Gertrudis) placed on the map at Los Dolores/ Apate.
C) Los Dolores/ Chilla is located correctly, but was not a seperate mission from Los Dolores/ Apate, just the new location.
D) Calamajue was not a separate mission from Santa Maria, just the first site for that one mission.
Also) The caption under the San Jose de Comondu mission photo is wrong regarding that mission's final move to 'San Ignacio', when it goes on to say
that 'San Ignacio' is "the home of the most beautifully decorated church in Baja California". The 'San Ignacio' that Comondu moved to was the visita's
name (today's San Jose Comondu) and NOT the San Ignacio, to the north.
The photo used for Calamajue is not the mission remains, but a newer rock corral... also Los Dolores/ Chilla photo is not of the mission ruins, but
taken over a mile away of an old wall (could be a mission-era winery ruin) behind Rancho La Presa.
I communicated with Ed Vernon about the errors and he was also surprised given that his book was a source, but not followed! Harry Crosby saw the book
the first time the very day I got mine... just released from the publisher/ distributor. I believe that Harry would have made the errors known if
given the opportunity.
Anyway, I have debated on how hard to come down on this book... and decided just to post the errors as they are from data known at the time of
printing (2008)... and let you decide if it belongs in you library or if you should wait for a corrected edition.

No worries, Neal... Just FYI: Sunbelt was NOT the publisher! However, they do distribute it along with other companies' books about Baja and the
Southwest.
PS. Got your message about the palapas... as for the building, you can't tell as the resolution doesn't show height. I went over to the Observatory by
Diablo... same thing, a white spot, but no height to it. THANKS for calling!
