Back Roads
Does anybody have any info on the road conditions from San Ignacio to San Juanico? We are going down there soon and would like to locate some GPS
waypoints for that area. Never have been there so it seems like the thing to do. We are also driving from San Francisquito to San Ignacio and someone
spoke of a cut-off road at one time ...any input is appreciated...thanks....GM

Never been that way into San Juanico but I recall hearing if the tides are low its faster to take the beach runs because the road's pretty rough in
spots--but that info is 10 years old--they may have put a gravel road all the way down by now........I also vaguely recall a jeep getting stuck in
that area by incoming tides in the old Baja 1,000 races in the 60's.

Thanks David...Now if I could locate a couple of GPS waypoints for the area between Sab Juanico and San Ignacio I'd be a happier camper...

San Ignacio to San Juanico
Hey Baja Loco -
I may try the north road to San Juanico at the end of the month (from San Ignacio). I'm not sure if I'll try it alone based on past reports. I'll ask
locally in San Ignacio and see what they say. Post a report if you go for it before then. If I go I'll try to get some GPS way points and if you'll be
in the area around the end of June or early July I might be interested in teaming up.

San Ignacio to San Juanico
Sounds interesting but I think we'll be a few days behind you. If interested in teaming up check at the Ignacio Springs B&B for a red 1990 dodge
regular cab with a white canopy (small not a big camper or anything). We are driving all the way from Pendleton, Oregon so its hard to say when we'll
get there. We are fully off road equiped with 4 wheel drive, band new toyo 10 ply tires, good attitude, shovel and tow strap. However we don't have
air conditioning so heat can be limiting also we go fairly slow as our 3/4 ton has real stiff suspension. Ask Gary or Terry at the B&B in San Ignacio
if they have heard from us - they may know where we are. It would be handy to have another truck on that road.

We will be driving a 1998 Chevy 3500 4x4. It is sandstone in color, has a shell, and will have two kayaks on top. We will keep an eye out for you. We
have to be on the east cape at the first of the month.

My friend just drove in with a fully loaded truck full of kitchen appliances with no problems. Taking the north part of the road which follows the
moutains after the turn off to the lagoon, he said there were three areas you would have to look out for but these were marked with stacked
rocks...not a problem to miss if you're alert and not going too fast. Total time on road fron San Ignacio was about 3 1/2hours to San Juanico. From
San Juanico, once you leave town, the road has recently been graded and is very nice.

Yes. Just keep following the road close to the mountains. I know of two people who have done it in the past week and they have not had any problems.
The Lagoon road is smoother, but the problem is in spots, the road goes off in different directions. They usually end up at the same place, but you
always are thinking, "Am I going the right way".
On the north road, you'll encounter a cattle gate near a ranch. There is a rancher who likes to open the gate for you and hands you a worn slip of
paper asking if you can donate some money. Most folks I know will give him a buck or two...he supports a family out in the middle of nowhere. If he's
not there, simply open/untie the gate, drive through and tie the gate back up. Also, about 20-30 miles past the gate, you'll come to a "T' in the
road. Follow the sign/arrow that says "San Juanico" and make a right. If you go left, you'll end up in a canyon...again, it's well marked so you won't
have a problem.

More questions if you don't mind. Do you know the difference in times if you left the gas station in San Ignacio going (the north route) by La Laguna
and through Insurgentes ( the south route) and going over the hill from Rosarito (east route)?
I have a funny story about the south route at http://groups.msn.com/TheBajasBestGuidesPhotoAlbum ifn yer interested.
Also, please tell Carlos Fiesta he still owes me some sunglasses!

7-8 hours from San Ignacio coming in via Loreto/Insurgentes. South road very easy and smooth. Would not recommend the East road at this time. Reports
I have heard is that it is not fun. Will let Carlos Fiesta know about the sunglasses!!!

We took the road from San Juanico north to San Ignacio a couple of months ago, and it's not at all hard to find--no need for GPS. It's been graded and
is pretty washboardy most of the way, but there weren't any places that would seriously challenge a 2WD vehicle.

Had eight vehicles come in from San Ignacio this past weekend and they took the "lagoon" road (lower) vs the "mountain" road (upper) into San
Juanico. They all advise to use the mountain/upper route. One was a 2004 VW Eurovan Camper with very low clearence. They made it, but it was a very
slow ride. North/upper road has some washboard, but air down and you'll be ok. Leaving San Juanico on the south road to La Purisima; the road crew is
still working on it and it has become fairly sandy in several spots. Again, air down and keep the forward momentuem when you come to them...it's
having an effect with the cerveza truck getting to town as well!
