El Golfo road

Hi Everyone-
This is not Baja related travel, but I'll bet someone has information about the new road from El Golfo to Puerto Penasco. Every year my friends in Arizona and I alternate camping trips to San Felipe and Puerto Penasco. I have an option of meeting them in Gila Bend and driving through Sonoita, or taking the new route through San Luis , and El Golfo to Puerto Penasco. I will be pulling my Burro 17 foot trailer again. My mom will be with me(she's 83). I have driven Mex.2 to San Luis alone with my trailer 2 years ago and felt totally safe.
David K.-Do you have access to a map of the new highway? Like you, I love maps, and would like to see where I'm going prior to the trip.
Since all the bad news about border towns lately, I wonder if Mom and I will be considered as a couple of vulnerable old gringas. Any info will be appreciated.

It was reported open here on Nomad a while ago (use Nomad search)...

I haven't seen and 'official' map of the new highway... it is in Sonora, however... so I haven't been looking too hard!

bbbait gave this report in another thread:

Quote:

The new road from El Golfo to Rocky Point is finished and the distance between the two towns is about 85 miles. This makes a nice shortcut and really opens it up for travelers heading to Rocky Point from Yuma and points west. We are from Blythe and it knocked at least a hundred miles off, of the route thru Ajo and Sonoita. Beautiful views of the gulf and the eastern Baja coastline, from Mexicali to Puertecitos. I will post some photos as soon as I figure it out, maybe Biglar will see this and come up front and help me!

DavidK and I offered to help with the photo posting but he hasn't taken us up on the offer.

He did! Last night... have a look:

From Wayno of B&B Bait, Blythe, CA

He will need to reply back with what the photo is of, or where... the only note was that the checkpoint pictured was not on the new highway, but north of El Golfo at El Doctor.

I added numbers (1-16) to each photo should there be questions or comments about any.

1) One mile north of El Golfo, where the new Puerto Peņasco road comes in from the right:

El Golfo road

Thanks everyone for the info. Still can't find any maps yet. Mom and I will be traveling this road alone. Are there any Green Angels or checkpoints along the way?Is the turnoff for the new road well marked?

Wayno said no checkpoints... the road is signed (not real clear in the photos at the intersection) on both ends.
