Be on the lookout for a U-haul truck

I just received an e-mail from Brenda Goodson who owns Las Casitas Motel in Santa Rosalia. Seems that last night a U-haul truck with an overhead pulled in to her motel and as they were signing up for a motel they asked how far away Arizona was. Seems that they entered Mexico at Tijuana and thought that would be a shortcut to Phoenix, Arizona which is their desitination. When Brenda was talking to them the woman, who is the driver, pointed south towards Mulege and said, "That is north isn't it, and how far is it to Phoenix." The two travelers are over 80 years old and the woman is doing all of the driving since the man is unable to drive and may be suffering from a little Alzheimer's Disease. They had no map, do not know a word of spanish, and could hardly believe that they had ended up in Mexico. Now can you imagine going through the checkpoints, clearing the infamous Federal Highway tent at San Ignacio, buying gas, eating, getting motel rooms, and ending up in Santa Rosalia.
Brenda gave them a map with as much information as she could come up with to try to get them to Tecate. She did not know if they had passports or anything.
So, if any of you nomads are out there traveling and see a U-haul overhead truck and the occupants looks dazed and lost maybe you can give them a hand and point them in the right direction.
They did indicate that they were members of the Jehovah's Witness church and that Jehovah was guiding them.

Too weird to not be true. Yet, so improbable on many levels.

Giving a map to a confused, lost elderly person and turning them lose to find their way home. Sounds like someone should have tried harder to right a bad situation.

I'd tell them to not drink the water, and everything else should turn out fine as long as they have enough money. Once they hit Cabo, they should know enough to turn around.

Actually, this is a new cartel trick. Truck was loaded with "cargo". They learned it from seeing Muslim extremists enlisting women as suicide bombers.

This is how Urban Folklore is born. Two hundred years from now, the truck will still be roaming Baja, stopping here and there for burgers and beer, then disappearing into the night with new maps and driving in the wrong direction.

It will be called "The Phantom U-Haul which will be used to scare the kids while driving through Baja. "Be good kids or The Phantom U-Haul couple will come and take you away." Something on the lines of the story of La Llorona. I know that one scared me as a kid. I would not go to the well at night to get water!

Maybe Jehovah had different plans for them, but just hasn't told them yet, or didn't say it loud enough?

All the kidding aside, if the story is true as first posted, these folks need help.

What struck me as improbable about this story is that there is absolutely no way a Uhaul with an overhead would just pass through San Ysidro or Otay. The customs guys at the border would be all over them with any kind of truck that size...

No the story is true. Brenda spent as much time as she could with the people and they were not aware enough of the gravity of their situation and refused to talk to anybody and try to solve their problem. She spent quite awhile with them and told them where to fill up with gas and that kind of thing. When she went in to town later they were at the gas station looking a little dazed and when she talked to them to ask what was going on, they indicated that they were waiting for instructions from Jehovah.
I understand the postion that someone should help these folks out, which was why I posted this note. I am in Colorado with my own fish to fry and Brenda has a business to run, and the last time I checked the social services office for wayward people in Santa Rosalia was closed. I thought that perhaps that if someone was headed north and sees the truck they might check on them or ask if they would like to follow you for awhile. The outpouring of help when Diver was stuck in El Rosario was a good indication of the spirit of helpfulness normally exhibited on this board and God forbid if it were your parents or grandparents in this kind of a situation.
