The tour will include lectures covering the pre-history and early history, explorations and mapping, mission period and post-mission period of Baja
California from 6000 BC to 1848. On site lectures will detail the mission visited, and additional information on numerous aspects of the region –
natural history, geology, climatology, etc. – will be provided. A mini-course on Baja California, Dr. Mathes will provide ample time for questions
and commentaries, and will suggest sources for those interested in further study.
The non-profit foundation CAREM has for over 10 years assisted in the identification, protection, preservation, restoration and presentation to the
public of the historical treasures of Baja California. Through volunteers, CAREM raises funds to aid these projects, sponsor cultural events and
lectures and maintain a growing research library in the city of Tecate, B. C. A fully volunteer, non-profit organization, 100% of funds raised go
toward these projects. The International Community Foundation of San Diego serves as agent for donations from the United States. Join our lectured
tour and learn the fascinating past of Baja California while contributing to important projects for its preservation.

I see Ligui listed... I wonder if Dr. Mathes knows the Ligui site was totally swallowed by the enlarged arroyo in 2001?

We first learned about this organization from the mother of one of our students in Calexico---an interesting and active organization.
Anyone who is really interested in the missions should consider donating and belonging to this or a similar organization, if there is one, and does
not just visit the sites.
From their website---here are some of their projects.
CAREM Projects
Projects Accomplished
•Restoration of Mission Site-Señora de Guadalupe (1834) Built Interpretation Center for information pertaining to the Missions of Baja California.
•Creation of a Specialized Library “Cuchama” (Information of Baja California) located in Tecate, B.C., Mexico
•Restoration of Ex Cuartel Military “Campo Alaska” in the Rumorosa, B.C., Mexico and establishment of a Museum in that building depicting information
on the history of the area.
•Educational seminars and workshops about the culture and history of Baja California
•Support and assistance for the museum located in Rosarito, B.C., Mexico - this museum presents and educates the public on the early days of the State
of Baja California and in particular the Rosarito area.
•Production of booklets and DVDs on the History of Baja California to be used by teachers and various school districts.
•Educational programs for schools, teachers and children about the heritage of the people of Baja California. The goal is to build pride in the
communities.
•Oral History Program - pioneers and residents of Tecate, Baja California. Histories to be stored in the archives of the “Cuchuma” library.
•Promotion of the Indigenes (Indian) Communities of Baja California including the sale of their art.
Continuing and Projects in Planning
•Development of entire cultural and educational center - Campo Alaska in the Rumorosa.
•Continued Educational Seminars featuring Baja California Historians and Authors.
•Program for the donation of books to the library.
•Program to donate books and materials about the history of Baja California to the schools of Baja California
•Continue the restoration programs for the Mission Sites in Baja California.
•Development of Community Museum for the city of Tecate, B. C., Mexico.
•Continue as a fund of the International Community Foundation.
•Participate in the construction and operation of a Kumiai Museum in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico.

Still a historical site - Dr. Mathes expounds on the history regardless of what's left and is part of the continuum of that history. Seeing the
geography, learning the dynamics of how the mission came to be, imagining how life must have been, cultural details of the indigenous is more
meaningful standing at the site. Seeing (or not seeing) a few adobe walls more or less doesn't make the history and the mission site any less
significant. I can't express how special it is to have Dr. Mathes as the historian on such a Baja mission tour. This isn't just some sight-seeing
bus.
