TIJUANA, MEXICO (June 25) -- The United States has earmarked $13 million to cleanup a wastewater treatment plant in Mexicali, Mexico as part of U.S.-Mexico effort to improve air and water quality along the border.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Mike Leavitt and Mexico?s Federal Agency of the Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Alberto Card##as Jimenez signed the Border 2012 Program agreement in Tijuana June 24.

State and local institutions in both countries will increase air monitoring to determine the causes, severity and trends of pollution across the border. The EPA also agreed to contribute up to $13 million to the Mexicali II wastewater treatment project to help remove up to 20 million gallons of raw sewage per day from the New River.

The 10-year 2012 Border Program focuses on cleaner air, water and land as well as improving environmental health, emergency response, planning and stewardship.

Yes, we're also helping to clean up another toxic site where an old Foundry plant used to be, closer to Otay. I'll see if I can find the article.
